 Introduced in 1969
NSS???
NSS stands for National Service Scheme.

 Objective - To develop personality and

character
 Purpose - ‘Education through Service’
 Inspired – By MAHATMA GANDHI.
 Moto - “NOT ME, BUT YOU”

 Recommended by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan
(Head of UGC).

 In first Five – Year plan in 1952

“Social and labour service” for
one year was stressed.

 In 1958 Jawaharlal Nehru, in a

letter to the chief ministers,
considered the idea of social service
as a prerequisite for graduation.

 He directed Ministry of Education

for introduction of national service
into the academic institutions.
 LAUNCH OF NSS
 Launched on September 24, 1969.
 The year 1969 was the Gandhi Centenary Year
whose ideals inspired the Indian youth to participate
in community service.

Aspects of NSS Programme
4 Aspects:
1. Institutional work: the students may be placed in selected welfare
agencies outside the campus to work as volunteers
2. Institutional Projects: Improvement of campuses
3. Rural Project: Eradication of illiteracy, health hygiene, sanitation, minor
irrigation work agricultural operation and construction of rural road etc.
4. Urban projects: Adult education, welfare of slum-dweller, training of
civil defence, setting up first aid posts, hospital work etc.

 why NSS is needed?
 Extra dimension to higher education.
 Orient youth to community service.
 Prevent alienation of college and +2 level
students.
 Expose them to life's realities and change social
perception.
 Sensitize them to the needs of the masses for
future policy-making.
 NSS volunteers
 A NSS volunteer should put in at least 120 hours each
year for 2 years.
 He should participate fully in the NSS Programmes.
 At least 20 hours for orientation in the following
manner-

i. General Orientation-2 hours

ii. Special Orientation-8 hours
iii. Program Skill Learning-10 hours.
 What are Aims of nss activities?

 Expose students to rural situations.

 Provide opportunities for students to plan and execute
development projects.
 Encourage students to work with other adults in rural areas.
 Develop leadership qualities.
 Emphasize dignity of labor and self-help.
 Encourage youth to participate in national development and
 Promote national integration
 WHAT ARE OBJECTIVES OF NSS?
NSS aims at developing the following qualities:

 To understand the community .

 To identify the needs and problems.
 To develop a sense of social and civic
responsibility.
 To find practical solutions to individual and
community problems.

The NSS symbol - Signifies the Based on the giant Rath Wheel
continuous efforts, energy, and of Konark Sun Temple
enthusiasm. (The Black Pagoda)

 8 spokes represents 8 Prahars (Todi, Miyan Malhar, Darbari,
Jaijaiwanti, Jog, Marwa, Bhairav, Shuddha Sarang) of a day.

 Preservation and
 Release.
 It signifies the movement in life across time and space.

Red colour - young blood that is lively,

active, energetic and full of high spirit.

 Known as Lakshya Geet.
 Written by Dr. K. C. Pant, the first Director of the NSS.
 Composed by C. Ramachandran
 First sung at the NSS National Camp in 1974.
 It is a call to action for young people to serve their
communities.
 The song's lyrics promote the values of service,
compassion, and unity.

 Duties of NSS volunteers
 Establish rapport with the people in the project area.
 Identify needs, problems and resources of the
community.
 Plan programs and carry out the plan.
 Relate learning experience towards finding solutions to
the problem identified.
 Record the activities.
 CODE OF CONDUCT OF NSS
VOLUNTEERS
 Work under the guidance of the group leader.
 They shall make themselves worthy of the
confidence and cooperation of the group
/community leadership.
 Avoid entering into any controversial issues.
 Keep day-to-day record of their.
 It is obligatory on the part of every volunteer to
wear the NSS Badge while on work.
