Box

The document outlines a comprehensive checklist for inspecting and testing the quality of boxes, including visual inspection, board structure verification, GSM testing, bursting strength, edge crush, box compression, water absorption, adhesive strength, drop tests, and storage handling. Each test has specific standards and acceptance criteria to ensure the boxes meet quality requirements. A quick factory checklist is also provided to summarize the essential checks that need to be confirmed.

1.

Visual Inspec on (First Check)

 ✔ No cracks, tears, or crushed edges

 ✔ Proper flute forma on (not flat or damaged)

 ✔ Uniform board thickness

 ✔ Clean pas ng (no open joints)

 ✔ Prin ng clear and readable

 ✔ No moisture, fungus, or oil marks

2. Board Structure Verifica on

Check the box specifica on:

 Type: 3-ply / 5-ply / 7-ply

 Flute type: A / B / C / E / BC

 GSM of kra paper (outer, inner & flu ng)

Measure thickness using a vernier caliper and compare with standard values.

3. GSM (Paper Weight) Test

 Cut a 10 cm × 10 cm sample

 Weigh it using a digital balance

 GSM = Weight × 100

✔ Ensure GSM matches approved specifica on.

4. Burs ng Strength Test (BST)

 Measured using Burs ng Strength Tester

 Indicates resistance to rupture

Typical acceptance:

 3-ply: 9–12 kg/cm²

 5-ply: 12–18 kg/cm²

 7-ply: 18–25 kg/cm²

(As per IS 1060 / ISO 2759)

5. Edge Crush Test (ECT) – Most Important

 Measures stacking strength

 Higher ECT = be er load-bearing capacity

Typical values:
 Light duty: 20–25 ECT

 Medium duty: 25–35 ECT

 Heavy duty: 35+ ECT

(Standard: TAPPI T811 / IS 2771)

6. Box Compression Test (BCT)

 Tests how much load a box can bear before collapsing

 Done using Compression Tes ng Machine

Cri cal for stacked storage & transport

7. Cobb Test (Water Absorp on)

 Measures water absorp on in g/m²

 Lower Cobb value = be er moisture resistance

Standard:

 Kra liner: ≤ 150 g/m²

(IS 1060 / TAPPI T441)

8. Adhesive (Pas ng) Strength Check

 Manually try to separate layers

 Pas ng should not peel easily

9. Drop Test (For Finished Box)

 Load box with actual product

 Drop from 600–1000 mm (as per weight)

 Box should not burst or deform excessively

(Standard: ISTA 1A / IS 7028)

10. Storage & Handling Check

 Boxes should be stored on pallets

 Avoid direct floor contact

 Keep away from moisture

Quick Factory Checklist

✔ Ply & flute as approved

✔ GSM within tolerance
✔ BST / ECT passed
✔ Proper pas ng
✔ No moisture damage
