The role of sugar in food preservation is significant. By adding
sugar in the food item, we reduce its moisture content and
hence, it stops the growth of the microorganisms.
3. Explain why antibiotics do not work against flu or any
infection caused by viruses.
Viruses cannot be killed by using antibiotics as their cell
pathways are different from that of bacteria. Antibiotics do
not work against flu or any infection caused by viruses
because it does not reduce the strength of the virus, nor does
it reduce the duration of the infection. But, however,
antibiotic will work if we get attacks bacterial disease.
4. Why oil is added while making pickle?
Oil seals off the air from the item that is being pickled and
thus inhibit the growth of most of the microorganisms.
5. What causes food poisoning?
Food poisoning could be due to the consumption of food
spoilt by some microorganisms.
7. Why pasteurized milk can be consumed without boiling?
Pasteurized milk can be consumed without boiling as it is free
from harmful microbes.
8. How can we prevent the spread of communicable
diseases?
We prevent the spread of communicable diseases:
 By keeping handkerchief on the nose and mouth while
sneezing.
 By keeping distance from infected persons.
9. How are jams and squashes preserved?

anywhere, in coolers, tyres, flower pot etc. By keeping the surroundings clean
and dry we can prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

If we take antibiotics when not needed or in wrong doses, it may make the
drug less effective when we might need it in future. Also, antibiotics taken
unnecessarily may kill the beneficial bacteria in the body.
15. What is called pasteurization?
It is a process in which milk is heated to about 70°C for 15 to 30 seconds and
then suddenly chilled and stored. By doing so, it prevents the growth of
microbes. This process was discovered by Louis Pasteur. It is called
pasteurization.
