Exp 8

The document outlines an experimental procedure to measure the potential energy of a magnet system by varying the separation between two bar magnets and recording interrupt times to calculate velocity and potential energy. It includes multiple setups to find equilibrium positions, measure time periods, and plot graphs of potential energy against separation and frequency. The document also specifies a grading rubric for the experiment, including sections for formulas, data tables, calculations, graphs, results, and viva.

Potential Energy of a Magnet

1. Set separation x between the two bar magnets. Take two interrupt time readings. Calculate the
average time. Use it to calculate the velocity. Using the measured velocity, calculate the potential energy
of the system. Take at least 5 readings. Plot a graph of potential energy(U) vs separation(x). Make sure
the separation is in such a way that graph justifies the behavior expected,

2. Set up the experiment with two fixed magnets. Locate the equilibrium position and fix the
sensor there. Take readings of interrupt time at least two positions on both sides of equilibrium (positive
and negative x) Calculate velocity for each position. Calculate corresponding potential energy U. Plot
graph of potential energy (U) vs position (x) taking equilibrium as x=0. Set the sensor in Gate mode. Take
atleast 5 readings from each side

3. Set up the experiment with two fixed magnets. Locate the equilibrium position and fix the sensor
there. Set the sensor in pendulum mode. Release the glider from at least 5 different positions (different
x). Measure the time period(T) and velocity for each case. Calculate the frequency (f) for each reading.
Use corresponding potential energy (U) plot the graph between energy and frequency.

velocity, calculate the potential energy of the system. Take at least 4 readings. Plot a graph of potential
