1/ Determine 𝜙𝑅𝑛 and 𝛺 for the connection shown below based on bolt limit states (Bearing
type connection).
Standard holes, S275 Steel (𝐹𝑦 = 275 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430 MPa).
a/ M20 bolts Grade 8.8 threads excluded from the shear plane.
b/ M24 bolts Grade 8.8 threads excluded from the shear plane.
c/ M22 bolts Grade 8.8 threads included in the shear plane.

2/ For the connection shown below determine the number of M24 Grade 8.8 bolts required for a
bearing type connection.

3/ Determine the number of M24 Grade 10.9 bolts required to develop full yielding capacity of the
UPN300 members. S275 Steel (𝐹𝑦 = 275 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430 MPa). Use LRFD provisions. Consider threads
excluded from shear plane. Consider 2 rows of bolts in the longitudinal direction.

4/ Determine the maximum value of 𝑃𝑢 permitted (Use LRFD).

S275 Steel (𝐹𝑦 = 275MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430MPa).
Standard holes, M20 Bolts Grades 8.8 threads excluded from shear plane.

5/ Determine the maximum value of 𝑃𝑢 permitted (Use LRFD).

S275 Steel (𝐹𝑦 = 275MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430MPa).
Standard holes, M22 Bolts Grades 8.8 threads excluded from shear plane.

6/ Determine the number of M20 Grade 8.8 bolts threads excluded from shear plane required in the
flange of I shape shown (bearing type connection). Do not consider bearing limit states.

7/ An HEA340 member is connected to the flange of a column with an extended end-plate (t= 15 mm
S355 grade) connection using twelve – M22, 6.8 grade bolts. Determine whether the bolted
connection is adequate under a point load, 𝑃𝑢 of 500 kN which is applied 300 mm apart from the
connection face, by only considering the connection limit states according to the AISC 360-16 LRFD
approach.
Threads are included in the shear plane (i.e., N type bolts are used). Standard bolt holes are
drilled on the plates.
𝐹𝑦 = 275 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430 MPa for S275 grade; 𝐹𝑦 = 355 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 490 MPa for S355 grade.

8/ An equal leg angle (L150x150x10 S275 grade) profile is connected to a gusset plate (𝑡 = 20 mm,
S235) using three M27, 8.8 grade bolts. Determine the tensile load, 𝑃𝑢 , permitted by AISC LRFD
approach.
Standard size holes are used and threads are not included in the shear plane. Check all possible
limit states except the tensile capacity of the gusset plate and neglect block shear.
𝐹𝑦 = 235 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 360 MPa for S235 grade steel.
𝐹𝑦 = 275 MPa, 𝐹𝑢 = 430 MPa for S275 grade steel.

9/ In a steel frame structure, a built-up I section is used as a corbel (short cantilever beam) to
support crane loads. It is first welded to a 20 mm thick end plate and then the end plate is connected
to the flange of the HE400B column using 8M20 Grade 8.8 bolts, as shown. Design crane load
obtained from LRFD combinations is 𝑃𝑢 = 320 kN. Assuming that the welds are OK, calculate the
maximum distance allowed (𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥 ) for the crane load from the face of the column flange for the
bolted connection to be safe.
Bolt threads are included in shear plane.
HE400B section and the end plate are S275 steel with 𝐹𝑢 = 430 MPa.
Check all strength limit states.
