Work Methodology for Staircase Construction
1. Site Preparation
• Survey the Area: Assess the site for dimensions, levels, and any existing structures.
• Mark the Layout: Use chalk lines or stakes to outline the staircase's footprint on the
terrace.
• Clear the Site: Remove any debris, vegetation, or obstructions from the construction
area.
2. Blinding Layer (C15)
• Excavation (cut & fill): Excavate to the required depth for the blinding layer, ensuring it
is level.
• Compaction: Compact the ground to the required strength (95% MDD)
• Concrete Pouring: Mix and pour concrete grade15 for the blinding layer. Use a vibrator
to eliminate air pockets.
• Curing: Allow the concrete to cure properly according to standard practices (typically 7
days).
3. Beams and slab Construction (C25)
• Formwork for Beams and slab: Construct formwork for the beams and slab that will
support the staircase ensuring it is level and secure.
• Reinforcement Placement: Install rebar 2Y12 T&B linked with Y8-250c/c for the beams
and BRC standard mesh for the slab as per structural drawings within the formwork.
• Concrete Pouring: Pour concrete grade25 into the beam and slab, ensuring proper
compaction.
• DPM installation: install damp proof membrane
• Reinforcement Placement: Install rebar for the slab (standard BRC mesh) tied to the
beams rebars as per structural drawings within the formwork.
• Curing: Allow beams to cure adequately.
4. Side Walls Construction (Hydraform)
• Setting out of Side Walls: Set up blocks on both sides of the staircase where walls are
required.
5. Top beam (C25) & Side rail installation
• Formwork for Top Beam: Construct formwork for the beam that will support the steel
railing ensuring it is level and secure
• Reinforcement Placement: Install rebar in the side walls as per design requirements.
• Side rails: Choose appropriate materials metal for side rails based on design
requirements.
• Post Installation: Install vertical posts at predetermined intervals along the staircase
sides.
• Concrete Pouring: Pour concrete grade 25 into the side wall formwork, ensuring proper
compaction.
• Curing: Allow adequate curing time.
5. Side Rails Installation
• Rail Attachment: Attach horizontal rails or panels securely to the posts.
• Finishing Touches: Ensure all joints are smooth, and apply paint or finish as needed for
aesthetics and protection.
6. Finishing Works
• Surface Treatment: Apply any necessary surface treatments to stairs, such as non-slip
coatings or tiles.
• Final Inspection: Conduct a thorough inspection of all elements to ensure compliance
with safety standards and design specifications.
7. Cleanup and Handover
• Site Cleanup: Remove all debris, formwork, and equipment from the site.
• Documentation: Prepare as-built drawings and document any changes made during
construction.
• Handover: Present the completed staircase to the client or project manager, ensuring they
are satisfied with the work.
Safety Considerations
• Ensure all workers wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Follow local building codes and regulations throughout the construction process.
• Implement safety measures when working at heights or near edges.
