Problem Statement - Docx 3

The document outlines a comparative study aimed at assessing the knowledge and practices regarding essential newborn care among primipara mothers in selected private and government hospitals. It highlights the critical importance of proper newborn care to reduce neonatal mortality, particularly in India, where a significant percentage of global neonatal deaths occur. The study seeks to identify gaps in knowledge and practices to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.

Introductio

Essential newborn care means the basic care

given to a baby immediately after birth to
keep the baby healthy and safe.
WHO in its studies stated that 1/3 neonatal
deaths occur due to the improper care or
due to infections e.g. Pneumonia, tetanus,
neonatal diarrhea etc., most new born deaths
can be avoided by both preventive measures
(such as clean delivery) and by effective
management of complications (management
of infection) and other daily care also have
important preventive effects (breast feeding,
eye care etc.)1. The newborn health
challenge faced by India is more formidable
than that experienced by any other country
in the world
Backgroun

Neonatal period is a very crucial period of life.

It is believed that mothers were the first
nurse who take care and met the primary
needs of the new born babies during wellness
and illness.
All newborns require care in this period to
minimize the risk of illness and maximize their
growth and development. The objective of the
study was to assess the knowledge and
practice on newborn care among primipara
mothers.
It is estimated that out of 3.9 million neonatal
deaths that occur worldwide, almost 30%
occur in India.
Need of the

Assess quality of care:

A comparative study can reveal differences
in the knowledge and practices of primipara
mothers based on where they deliver,
pointing to potential disparities in the quality
of care and education they receive.

Identify knowledge and practice gaps:

By comparing private and government
hospitals, the study can identify specific areas
where knowledge or practice is lacking in one
or both settings, such as in feeding, hygiene,
or recognition of danger signs.
Improve maternal and infant outcomes:
Newborn care is critical, as improper
practices can lead to serious
complications or death. Understanding
these differences can help
bridge the knowledge gaps and
improve practices, directly
impacting infant mortality rates.
