Complex Engineering Problem: Critical Analysis

Course Title: Chemical Reaction Engineering (T) Course Code: CHE331 Credit Hours: 4(3,1)

Course Instructor: Dr. Umm e salma Amjad Program Name: BS Chemical Engineering

Semester: 6th Batch: FA23-CHE -068 Section B

CEP #: 01 CEP Title: Optimal production of styrene

Name : Muhammad Rayyan

Problem: Optimal production of styrene

Road map:

Step 1. Reaction analysis:

 Write stoichiometry

 Identify reaction type (reversible, endothermic)

 Collect kinetics from literature

 Identify catalyst properties

Step 2. Thermodynamics and kinetic modeling:

 Define the main reactions and side reactions that that produces benzene,

toluene and ethylene.

 Calculate equilibrium conversion vs. temperature.

 Study the steam dilution impact.

Step 3. Process Optimization & Simulation:

Optimize the inlet temperature (usually 580–630°C) and maintain sub-atmospheric
or low positive pressure.

Step 4. Kinetic model selection:

 Determine Arrhenius constants
 Identify inhibition terms

Step 5. Reactor selection:

 Energy balance (VERY important here)

 Pressure drop (Ergun equation)

 Catalyst weight estimation

Step 6. Heat required calculations:

 Calculate heat duty
 Decide reheating method
 Furnace heating

 Steam superheating
 Heat exchanger
Step 7. Process integration:
 Heat recovery system

 Recycle unreacted EB

 Hydrogen removal

 Separation column design
