Self-Study Guide for Pronunciation Awareness
Focus: clarity of vowel sounds, /r/ and /th/ Sounds
Purpose: This guide is designed to help you become more aware of how you produce English
vowel sounds and specific consonants (/r/ and /th/). The goal is not perfection, but improved
awareness, clarity, and confidence in your spoken English.

Practice 1. Articulation 101 duration: 2 weeks (due 23 May 2025)
Goal: Learn how English sounds are physically produced by observing articulation videos
and practicing with a mirror.
Steps:
1. Watch the short videos provided under the “Articulation 101” section

English Vowel Sounds
2. Watch: “English Vowel Practice for clear speech”. Pay attention to the movement of
lips, tongue, and jaw.
3. Mirror Practice: Repeat the words and phrases from the videos while watching
yourself in the mirror.
4. Task 1: Record Tongue Twisters
5. Reflection:
Complete Journal 1 in the “Self-Reflection Journal” section.
Practice 2: /r/ Sound duration: 2 weeks (Due 6 June 2025)
Goal: Understand and improve the clarity of the /r/ sound through focused observation
and articulation practice.
Steps:
1. Watch the videos under the “/r/ Sound” section:
o /r/ Sound Videos 1, 2, and 3
o /r/ Sound Articulation Exercise
2. Practice minimal pairs aloud (e.g., right/light, rock/lock).
3. Task 2: Slow Reading & Recording
Choose the provided short story and record yourself reading it slowly and clearly.
4. Reflection:
Complete Journal 2 in the “Self-Reflection Journal” section.
Practice 3: /th/ Sounds ( /θ/ and /ð/) Duration: 3 weeks (due 27 June 2025)
Goal: Learn to differentiate and articulate the voiceless /θ/ (as in "think") and voiced /ð/ (as
in "this") sounds.
Steps:
1. Watch the videos in the “/th/ Sound” section:
o Voiceless & Voiced – What Are Those?
o Voiceless /th/ (/θ/) Sound Videos 1 & 2
o Voiced /th/ (/ð/) Sound Videos 1 & 2
2. Practice with the articulation exercises.
3. Say aloud the minimal pairs (e.g., think/sink, this/these).
4. Task 3a & 3b: Slow Reading & Recording
Record yourself reading the short stories for both voiceless and voiced /th/ sounds.
5. Reflection:
Complete Journal 3 in the “Self-Reflection Journal” section.
