Reflection Homework Worksheet - Answers

The document provides instructions for completing ray diagrams by drawing reflected rays. It explains the difference between specular reflection, which occurs on smooth surfaces resulting in parallel reflected rays, and diffuse reflection, which occurs on rough surfaces causing scattered rays. In both cases, the angles of incidence and reflection are equal.

Reflection of Light Answers

1. Draw the reflected ray to complete each ray diagram. Remember to use a ruler and
a sharp pencil. In the first example, the normal has been drawn for you.

2. Describe the difference between specular and diffuse reflection.

Use the words from the box below.

Key Words

diffuse distorted equal reflected

rough scattered smooth specular

When parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface such as a mirror, the rays are reflected
off that surface and in the same direction as the other rays. This is called specular
reflection.

When parallel rays of light are reflected off a rough surface, they are scattered in
all directions, producing a distorted image or no image at all. This is called diffuse
reflection.

For both types of reflection, the angles of incidence and reflection are equal.
