Dangling Modifier: meaning and how to use (avoid) it

1. What is a dangling modifier?

A dangling modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that describes something that is not clearly stated in the sentence.

Most often, it is a participial phrase (–ing / –ed) placed at the beginning of a sentence, but the doer of the action is
missing or wrong.

Key idea:

The modifier must logically and grammatically modify the subject of the main clause.

2. Common forms of dangling modifiers

Present participle: Walking, Running, Talking…

Past participle: Broken, Built, Given…

Perfect participle: Having finished, Having seen…

Infinitive phrases: To improve…, To save time…

3. Examples of dangling modifiers (wrong)

a. Walking down the street, the trees were beautiful.

Trees cannot walk.

b. After finishing the exam, the paper was collected.

The paper didn’t finish the exam.

c. To get good grades, hard work is required.

Who wants to get good grades?

4. How to identify a dangling modifier

Ask these questions:

Who is doing the action in the modifier?

Is that person or thing the subject of the main clause?

If the answer is no, the modifier is dangling.

 5. How to correct / use modifiers properly

1. Method 1: Add the correct subject

Make sure the subject performs the action in the modifier.

Wrong: Walking down the street, the trees were beautiful.

Correct: Walking down the street, I admired the beautiful trees.

2. Method 2: Change the modifier into a full clause

Wrong: After finishing the exam, the paper was collected.

Correct: After the students finished the exam, the paper was collected.

3. Method 3: Rewrite the sentence

Wrong: To save time, the assignment was typed.

Correct: To save time, she typed the assignment.

6. Correct use (no dangling modifier)

Knowing the answer, the student raised his hand.

Having completed the work, she went home.

Built in 2020, the bridge connects two towns.

7. Practice (try to find and correct) the following sentences

1. While driving to school, the bag fell off the bus.

2. Having been delayed, the meeting was cancelled.

3. To understand the lesson, careful listening is needed.

Here are the corrected versions of each sentence

Problem: The modifier while driving to school wrongly modifies the bag. A bag cannot drive.

Corrected: While driving to school, I dropped my bag off the bus. OR

Correct: While we were driving to school, the bag fell off the bus.

2. Having been delayed, the meeting was cancelled. ❌

Problem: The phrase having been delayed suggests the meeting did the delaying, which is illogical.

The cause of the delay is now clear.

3. To understand the lesson, careful listening is needed. ❌

Problem: The infinitive phrase to understand the lesson has no clear subject.

Corrected: If students want to understand the lesson, they must listen carefully.
