ABSTRACT
The objective of this research is to study the effect of carbon nanotubes on the
mechanical properties of concrete. Nanotechnology is not a new science and it is not a new
technology. It is rather an extension of the sciences and technologies that have already been in
development for many years and it is the logical progression of the work that has been done to
examine the nature of our world at an ever smaller scale. The construction business will
inevitably be a beneficiary of this nanotechnology; in fact, it already is in the fields of concrete,
steel and glass. Concrete is stronger, more durable and more easily placed, steel tougher and
glass self-cleaning. Increased strength and durability are also a part of the drive to reduce the
environmental footprint of the built environment by the efficient use of resources.
To achieve the purpose of this thesis, carbon nanotubes with 96% purity and internal
diameter 4 to 8 nm and external diameter 10 to 15 nm used in concrete, the percent of silica fume
was 15% of total binder content. The water to binder ratio used in all mixes was (0.4) and to
overcome the decrease in workability a high range water reducer was used by percent 3%. The
effect of CNTs on the mechanical properties of concrete and durability of concrete was
investigated through seven concrete mixes using ( 0%, 0.015%, 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5% )
CNTs content with binder content 450 kg/m3.
The effect of the key variable was CNTs content, was studied in this investigation.
Compression test, indirect tensile strength test, and sulfate resistance test were carried out to
determine the properties of hardened concrete. In addition, to compare microstructure of concrete
with and without CNTs, scanning electron microscopy was carried out.
The test result showed that using 0.015% CNTs with 15% silica fume increase the
compressive strength by percent 7.15%, 40.54%, and 37.78% for 450 kg/m3 binder content
respectively at ages 2, 28, and 56 days. Using 0.015% CNTs with 15% silica fume increased the
indirect tensile strength by percent 4.3%, 23.3%, and 20% for 450 kg/m 3 binder content
respectively at ages 2, 28, and 56 days. Using 0.015% CNTs with 15% silica fume increased the
sulfate resistance strength by percent 36.75% for 450 kg/m3 binder content at age 56 days.
Scanning electron microscopy was carried out to study the mechanism of CNTs on the
properties of concrete, The results showed that the addition of CNTs working to reduce calcium
hydroxide resulting from the rehydration process and increase calcium silicate hydrate, as well as
working to reduce the pores and cracks in the concrete, which have a major role to improve the
resistance of concrete permeability.
