Tutorial Chapter 3 - C

The document outlines a tutorial with exercises focused on deriving equations of motion for various mechanical systems using Newton's second law and Lagrange's equations. It includes tasks to find natural frequencies, mode shapes, and to plot these shapes for different configurations of mass-spring systems. Additionally, it addresses the calculation of flexibility and stiffness influence coefficients for specific systems.

TUTORIAL CHAPTER 3

Exercise 1
1. Derive the equations of motion, using Newtons second law of motion, for each of the
system shown in Fig. 1
2. Mass m3 is now removed. The spring with stiffness k, whose lower end is attached to mass
m2, has it upper end attached to the ground. The spring with stiffness 5k, whose lower end
is attached to mass m1, has it upper end attached to the ground. Write the equations of
motion for free vibrations, assuming m1 = m2 = m.
3. Find the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system
4. Plot the mode shapes

Exercise 2
Derive the equations of motion of the system shown in Fig. 2 by using Lagrange’s equations with
x and  as generalized coordinates.

Exercise 3
Find the flexibility and stiffness influence coefficients of the system shown in Fig. 3.
Derive the flexibility and stiffness matrices of the spring-mass system shown in Fig. 4 assuming
that all the contacting surfaces are frictionless.

Exercise 4
Find the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system shown in Fig. 5 with m1 = m, m2 =
2m and k1 = k2 = k
Plot the mode shapes
