L1:
1.1 Introduction to Prompt Engineering
1.1.1 What is Prompt Engineering?
An LLM is a neural network (a kind of machine learning model) trained on
huge amounts of text data — books, articles, websites, etc and more — so it can
learn the patterns, meanings, and structures of human language.
It predicts the next word or sentence based on patterns it learned from huge
datasets. Alone, it’s powerful but directionless — it will generate text, but the
quality depends entirely on inputs. Prompt engineering is the method of crafting
inputs (prompts) so the LLM produces desired outputs. It tells the LLM what
task to do, in what style, and with what constraints.
A prompt is the query, directive, or example given to an LLM. It establishes
the background, clarifies the assignment, and provides the LLM answer
framework. We can adjust the language, provide particulars, and apply different
strategies to make the LLM’s output creative, convincing, educational, or
anything else we desire.
Prompts are input instructions or cues that influence the model’s reaction to AI
models. These prompts can be presented as conditional restrictions, system-defined
instructions, or instructions in natural language.
An LLM (like GPT-5) is trained to understand and generate human-like text.
● A brief passage of text known as a prompt serve as a roadmap for an LLM’s
answer. It might be as straightforward as one sentence or as intricate as
2
several clauses and directives.
Fig. 1 Prompt input
● The purpose of a prompt is to give the LLM just enough details to
comprehend the question asked of it and to produce an insightful and
pertinent response.
Fig. 2 Components of Prompt
Through the provision of unambiguous and explicit cues, developers can
direct the behavior of the model and impact the output produced.
1.1.2 What Makes Prompt Engineering Vital?
Many options become possible when prompts are used to control the LLM’s
behavior. For the following reasons, timely engineering is becoming more and
more crucial:
Reaching beyond the pre-programmed limits of LLMs, prompts can assist us
in realizing the full potential of these tools. We can use their extensive
knowledge and skills for things they weren’t made for, like authoring engrossing
novels or complex musical compositions.
Increasing precision and management: We can direct the LLM toward
pertinent and factually correct outcomes by carefully crafting the prompts. This is
essential for uses like news reporting or scientific study, where accurate
3
information is critical.
Increasing uniqueness and creativity: Prompts can ignite an LLM’s
imagination, producing novel and surprising results. They can help us develop
creative solutions to challenging issues, come up with novel ideas, or even
produce brand-new works of art and entertainment.
Democratizing AI: A greater spectrum of users, including those without in-
depth technical knowledge, can now more easily access LLMs thanks to prompt
engineering. We can enable everyone to leverage AI for their creative and
productive efforts by offering user-friendly interfaces and clear prompts.
1.2 The Evolution of Prompt Engineering
Although prompt engineering is a relatively new topic, its origins can be found in
the early stages of artificial intelligence. Let’s go back in time and examine how
this fascinating art form has changed over the years:
1.2.1 Antecedents
ELIZA (1966): Many people believe that Joseph Weizenbaum’s chatbot, ELIZA,
is the original instance of what can be referred to as basic prompt engineering.
It imitated therapeutic discussion by deftly adjusting keywords and patterns in
user input, setting the stage for dialogue systems to come.
SHRDLU : In the 1970s, Terry Winograd developed SHRDLU, a natural language
system that was mostly dependent on human orders and instructions. It could
reason about blocks in a virtual environment. This demonstrated how language
may direct AI behavior in particular situations.
1.2.2 Early Emergence
Mad Hatter dialogue systems (1990s) ]: These systems, such as Jabberwacky and
ALICE, placed a strong emphasis on the use of hilarious responses and open-ended
questions, pushing the limits of natural language interaction and opening the
door for more inventive uses of prompts.
Template-based approaches : In the 2000s, systems such as Madalyn and Galatea
gained popularity. These systems used user-provided data to
fill in predefined templates and slots to generate stories. The groundwork
for organized prompting methods was therefore established.
1.2.3 The Rise of Large Language Models
The Transformer revolution (2017): With the introduction of the Transformer
architecture, NLP underwent a revolution that produced some of the most
potent LLMs ever, like GPT-3 and Jurassic-1 Jumbo. These models made prompt
4
engineering shine because of their enormous knowledge bases and capacity to
produce writing that is of human caliber.
Adjusting and adjusting (2020s): Modern times are marked by quick progress in
optimizing LLMs for certain activities and enabling prompt- based context
adaptation. Even more sophisticated control of LLM outputs is possible with the
use of techniques like few-shot learning and conditional generation.
1.3 Types of Prompts
The following are various types of prompts:
● Natural Language Prompts: These prompts mimic human-like directions,
offering direction in the form of clues found in natural language. They make
it possible for developers to engage with the model more naturally by
providing commands that mimic human speech.
● System Prompts: These are pre-written guidelines or templates that
developers supply to direct the output of the model. They give the model
clear instructions on how to express the intended output format or behavior
in an organized manner.
● Conditional Prompts: Conditional prompts entail subjecting the model to
particular limitations or contexts. Developers can direct the behavior of the
model by implementing conditional prompts, which are based on
conditional statements like “If X, then Y” or “Given A, generate B.”
1.4 How Does Prompt Engineering Work?
The process of prompt engineering is intricate and recursive. The optimal
strategy will differ based on the particular LLM and the work at hand; there is
no one-size-fits-all method for developing effective prompts. Nonetheless,
prompt engineers might adhere to the following broad principles:
● Begin with a thorough comprehension of the task. What are your
expectations for the LLM? What sort of results are you seeking? After you have
a firm grasp of the assignment, you can begin to develop a prompt that will
assist the LLM in accomplishing your objectives.
● Make your terminology precise and succinct. Use simple language There
should be no doubt in the LLM’s understanding of your request. Make use of
straightforward language and refrain from using technical or jargon terms.
● Give details. The likelihood that the LLM will produce a pertinent and
educational response increases with the level of specificity in your prompt.
To get the LLM to “write a poem,” for instance, you may ask it to “write a
poem about a lost love.”
● Give instances and examples. Give the LLM samples of the kind of output
you are hoping to achieve, if at all feasible. This will make it easier for the
LLM to comprehend your goals and produce more precise outcomes.
● Try something out. (Experiment refine and reiterate)Prompt engineering
5
cannot be approached in a one-size-fits-all manner. Experimenting with
various prompts and seeing the outcomes is the most effective approach to
discovering what functions.
The field of quick engineering has a bright future ahead of it. What to anticipate
is:
The emergence of specialist prompting languages: Just as computers are
guided by programming languages, creating efficient prompts may become even
more accessible and intuitive with the help of specialized prompting languages.
Pay close attention to control and explain ability. As LLMs get more
complicated, it will be important to know how prompts affect their results.
Explainable AI approaches will provide insight into prompt engineering’s inner
workings.
Ethical considerations: Using the ability to influence LLM behavior ethically
is a duty. It will be crucial to address problems with bias, justice, and manipulation
if rapid engineering is to be developed responsibly.

1.5 Comprehending Prompt Engineering’s Function in
Communication
Human contact is fundamentally based on communication, and quick
engineering has the potential to completely transform communication as LLMs
become more and more common. Now let’s explore the intriguing interaction
between these two domains:
Improving Specificity and Clarity: Prompts can serve as beacons of light, pointing
the LLM in the direction of succinct and transparent communication. We
may avoid misconceptions and make sure the intended audience
understands the LLM’s message by giving context, defining goals, and
identifying desired tones.
Increasing Creativity and Engagement: Prompts can help the LLM reach their
creative potential, resulting in stimulating and thought-provoking dialogue.
Debate ideas can start thought-provoking conversations, but storytelling
prompts can produce engrossing stories. This creates opportunities for creative
expression and new kinds of communication.
Adapting Communication to Different Contexts: The LLM’s communication
style can be modified by prompts to meet a variety of situations. A persuasive
argument, a casual chat message, or a formal email all need a different tone and
strategy. Creating focused questions enables the LLM to handle these subtleties
with ease.
Overcoming Linguistic Barriers: By empowering LLMs to translate languages
6
precisely and naturally, prompt engineering can promote cross- cultural
communication. Language difficulties can be overcome with more ease and
effectiveness when prompts are used to provide cultural allusions, nuanced
interpretations, and intended meanings.
Ethical Issues: Despite the enormous potential of prompt engineering in
communication, ethical issues need to be taken into account. Prompts with built-
in biases may cause discriminatory communication and manipulation techniques
may be applied maliciously. Appropriate prompt design and use are essential to
ensuring moral and helpful communication.
1.6 The Advantages of Prompt Engineering
One effective method for raising LLM performance is prompt engineering. Prompt
engineers can assist LLMs in producing more precise, consistent, and imaginative
results by carefully constructing prompts. Several uses for this could be
advantageous, including:

Prompt Engineering Techniques for ChatGPT
3.1 Introduction to Prompt Engineering Techniques
“Introduction to Prompt Engineering Techniques” provides a foundational
overview of the various methods employed to guide the output of natural
language processing models, with a specific focus on ChatGPT. This chapter
serves as a gateway to understanding the intricacies of prompt engineering and
its pivotal role in shaping the responses generated by AI language models.
Readers are introduced to the concept of prompt engineering, which involves
crafting specific prompts or instructions to direct the model’s output. The
chapter outlines the importance of prompt engineering in ensuring that AI
models like ChatGPT generate relevant, accurate, and high-quality text
responses across a variety of tasks and domains.
Key topics covered in this introductory chapter include an overview of
9
different prompt engineering techniques, such as standard prompts, role
prompting, seed-word prompting, and more. Readers will gain insight into how
each technique operates and its potential applications in influencing ChatGPT’s
text-generation process.
Moreover, the chapter sets the stage for exploring the practical
implementation of prompt engineering techniques, highlighting their versatility
and adaptability to various scenarios. Through illustrative examples and
discussions, readers will develop a solid understanding of how to effectively
utilize prompt engineering techniques to tailor ChatGPT’s responses to specific
needs and requirements.
3.2 Instructions Prompt Technique
The “Instructions Prompt Technique” is a method employed to guide the
output of natural language processing models, such as ChatGPT, by providing
specific instructions for the model to follow. This technique ensures that the
generated text aligns with the desired objectives and requirements of the task
at hand.
Example, if the task is to generate customer service responses, the instructions
prompt might include guidelines such as
● “responses should be professional and provide accurate information.”
By providing these instructions, users can steer ChatGPT towards
producing responses that meet the criteria of professionalism and accuracy.
Another example is generating a legal document. In this case, the
instructions prompt might specify that
● “the document should be in compliance with relevant laws and
regulations.”
This instruction ensures that the generated legal document adheres to legal
standards and requirements.
The Instructions Prompt Technique can also be combined with other prompt
engineering methods for enhanced precision and control over the model’s output.
For instance, when generating a product review for a new smartphone,
instructions might dictate that “the review should be unbiased and informative.”.
This instruction, along with role prompting to adopt the perspective of a tech
expert and seed-word prompting to focus on specific features of the
smartphone, can result in a comprehensive and insightful product review.
3.3 Zero, One, and Few Shot Prompting
“Zero, One, and Few Shot Prompting” is a prompt engineering technique utilized
to enhance the capabilities of natural language processing models like ChatGPT by
providing varying degrees of contextual information during the inference
process. This technique is particularly useful when the model is tasked with
generating responses based on limited examples or context.
3.3.1 Zero Shot Prompting
Zero Shot Prompting is a prompt engineering technique used in natural
10
language processing models like ChatGPT to generate responses without any
specific examples or training data related to the given task. Instead of providing
examples or context, users only offer a prompt or instruction to the model.
For instance, if the task is to generate a poem about nature, the user would
input the prompt “Write a poem about nature” to ChatGPT. Without any additional
context or examples, ChatGPT utilizes its pre-existing knowledge and
understanding of language to generate a poem about nature. This technique is
particularly useful when users want the model to demonstrate its generalization
capabilities and produce responses based solely on its internal knowledge. It
allows for more flexible and open- ended interactions with the model, where
users can explore its creativity and ability to generate text without relying on
specific examples. However, it’s important to note that Zero Shot Prompting may
sometimes result in responses that are less accurate or relevant compared to
prompts provided with examples or context. Users should be mindful of this
limitation and consider employing other prompt engineering techniques, such
as One Shot Prompting or Few Shot Prompting, when more precise responses
are required.
Fig. 3.1 Example of Zero Shot Prompting
3.3.2 One Shot Prompting
One Shot Prompting is a prompt engineering technique utilized in natural
language processing models such as ChatGPT to generate responses based on a
single example or instance provided by the user. In this approach, users supply
the model with a specific example relevant to the task at hand, and the model
then uses this example to generate a response .
For example, if the task is to summarize a given paragraph of text, the user
would provide ChatGPT with a single sentence from that paragraph. ChatGPT
then leverages this example to understand the context and generate a summary
that aligns with the provided sentence.
One Shot Prompting is particularly useful when users have limited examples
or context available but still want the model to produce accurate and relevant
responses. By offering a single example, users can guide ChatGPT to generate
responses that are consistent with the provided context, leveraging the model’s
ability to generalize from limited data.
11
Fig. 3.2 Example of One Shot Prompting
However, it’s essential to note that the effectiveness of One Shot Prompting may
vary depending on the complexity of the task and the quality of the example
provided. In some cases, providing additional examples or employing other
prompt engineering techniques, such as Few Shot Prompting, may be necessary
to improve the accuracy and relevance of ChatGPT’s responses.

L4:
3.3.3 Few Shot Prompting
This prompt engineering technique is used in natural language processing
models like ChatGPT to generate responses based on a small number of examples
or instances provided by the user. In this approach, users supply the model with
a few relevant examples or instances related to the task at hand, and the model
then uses these examples to generate a response.
For example, if the task is to generate a product review for a new
smartphone, the user might provide ChatGPT with a few sentences describing
the smartphone’s features, specifications, and user experience. ChatGPT then
leverages these examples to understand the context and generate a review that
encompasses the provided information.
Few Shot Prompting allows users to provide additional context and
guidance to ChatGPT, enabling the model to produce more accurate and
relevant responses compared to One Shot Prompting or Zero Shot Prompting.
By offering a few examples, users can help ChatGPT better understand the
nuances of the task and generate responses that align closely with the provided
context. However, it’s important to note that while Few Shot Prompting can
12
enhance the model’s performance, it still relies on the quality and relevance of
the examples provided by the user. Users should ensure that the examples are
representative of the task and contain sufficient information to guide ChatGPT
effectively. Additionally, users may need to experiment with the number and type
of examples provided to optimize the model’s performance for different tasks and
domains.
Fig. 3.3 Example of Few Shot Prompting
3.4 Self-Consistency Prompt
The Self-Consistency Prompt is a sophisticated prompt engineering technique
employed in natural language processing models like ChatGPT to ensure the
Figure 1Fig. 3.3 Example of Few Shot Prompting
coherence and logical consistency of the generated text. This technique involves
providing the model with a prompt that contains key information, statements, or
facts that users want the generated text to adhere to or remain consistent with
throughout the conversation. Unlike traditional prompts that simply instruct the
model to generate text based on a given task or context, the Self-Consistency
Prompt includes specific elements aimed at guiding the model to maintain
consistency and coherence. These elements could include background
information, established facts, opinions, or constraints relevant to the
conversation topic.
For instance, in a scenario where ChatGPT is engaged in a discussion about
climate change, the Self-Consistency Prompt might include scientific data,
consensus statements, or commonly accepted principles related to climate
science. By incorporating this information into the prompt, users guide
ChatGPT to generate responses that align with the provided context and
remain consistent with established scientific knowledge throughout the
conversation.
The Self-Consistency Prompt is particularly valuable in situations where
maintaining coherence and logical consistency is crucial, such as educational
13
content, technical discussions, or decision-making processes. By anchoring the
conversation to specific information or constraints, users can ensure that
ChatGPT generates responses that are accurate, informative, and contextually
appropriate. However, it’s essential to strike a balance when crafting Self-
Consistency Prompts. Providing too much detail or overly restrictive
instructions may limit the model’s flexibility and creativity, potentially leading
to repetitive or unnatural responses. Therefore, users should aim to provide
sufficient guidance while allowing ChatGPT the freedom to generate diverse and
natural language responses within the established constraints.
