Discussion 1

An atom consists of a nucleus made of protons and neutrons, with electrons orbiting around it, and atoms differ by the number of these particles. In Positron Emission Tomography (PET), key elements like Fluorine-18, Carbon-11, and Oxygen-15 are used in radiotracers to detect radiation emitted during the process. Understanding quantum chemistry and biochemistry is essential for improving radiotracer efficiency and minimizing radiation effects on patients.

1,What is an atom made of and how does one atom differ from another?

- To my knowledge, atom is made of central nucleus (proton, neutron) and surrounded by

orbiting electrons
- Protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged and neutrons are
neutral.
- Atoms differ from each other by the number of neutrons, protons.
[Link] specific elements from the periodic table are involved in PET?
- The key elements involved in PET are Fluorine-18, and carbon-11 and oxygen-15 are
used in radiotracers
- Basically, the PET works by collecting the radiation of the radiotracer (radioactive sugar,
which is injected into our body before we get into the machine). The tracer emits
positrons which when they meet an electron they produce 2 gamma rays that travel in
opposite directions, then the rays get picked up by the machine and being transferred
into a graph.
[Link] do scientists measure and quantify the correct dose for a treatment like this?
- Scientists measure and quantify dosage using three main methods: dimensional analysis,
ratio–proportion, and formula methods (also known as the desired-over-have method).
- These methods help ensure accurate calculation of the correct dose based on the required
amount and the available concentration.
[Link] are some atoms radioactive? What are the different types of radioactivity?
- Because of the unstable state of some atoms’ nuclei, which come from the imbalance of
too many or too few neutrons for their protons that generate excess energy shooting out
particles and energy (radiation).
- The main types of radioactivity involve the emission of alpha particles, beta particles, or
gamma rays, as the nucleus transforms into a different element
[Link] chemistry would you like to know in order to more fully understand this
approach?
- To my knowledge, in order to gain a deep insight into this field, having a good
background knowledge of quantum chemistry and biochemistry.
- In terms of quantum chemistry, this major allows us to understand how the atom
happens in chemical reactions, thus, giving us an ability to control and graphify the
radiation emmit by the radiotracer. Furthermore, this knowledge enables scientists to
lower the effect of radiation on patients while still keeping the efficiency.
- Regarding biochemistry, this branch helps scientists working on the radiotracer to make
it emit more radiation and lower the damage caused to patients. Moreover, biochemistry
helps us to understand how chemical reactions and chemical substances affect human
bodies, genetic and neuro systems, so that can create a new machine and process that
minimize the effect of radiation and the fluorine-18 when getting PET
