Mastery Assignment 2:

1. Define isotope: isotopes are atoms of the same element that differ in mass. Atoms with the
same number of protons and electrons, but different number of neutrons.

Explain what is shown in a nuclear symbol, and give an example

*Mass number (x= protons + neutrons) as a superscript on the LEFT
*Atomic number (# of protons) as a subscript on the LEFT
*Element symbol in the middle
*If there was a charge it would be written superscript on the RIGHT
Example: 146C
Mass #: 14 (protons & neutrons), Atomic #: 6 (protons), Element: carbon(C), Neutrons: 14-6=8

2. Define each of the following isotopes by determining the number of protons, neutrons, and
electrons in each. Protons Neutrons Electrons
a. argon-36 18 18 18
b. argon-38 18 20 18
c. argon-40 18 22 18
3. Write the symbol to represent the particle that has 33 protons, 45 neutrons, and 36 electrons.
78 3-
33As

4. Use the periodic table to determine the numbers of protons, neutrons, and electrons for each of
the following:
protons neutrons electrons
52
24𝐶𝑟 24 28 24

87 + 37 50 36
37𝑅𝑏

neon-22 10 12 10

32 2− 16 16 18
16𝑆

bromine-82 35 47 35

5. List the three subatomic particles of an atom. What are the major characteristics of these particles?
-Protons (+1): positively charged subatomic particle with a relative mass of 1 (atomic mass
unit, amu). The proton is in the nucleus of the atom.
-Neutrons (0): neutrons are neutral in charge and have a relative mass of 1 amu. Neutrons are
located within the nucleus of the atom.
-Electrons (-1): electrons have a negative charge and a relative mass of 0. Electrons are located
in the area around the nucleus.

6. Determine if each of the following is an element or a compound.

a. Co-element e. NO-compound
b. HF-compound f. No-element
c. Hf-element g. Na2CO3-compound
d. CoO-compound h. Cl2-element
7. Give the nuclear symbol and name for:
a. an isotope with a mass number of 26 and an atomic number of 12. 2612Mg -magnesium
b. an isotope with 30 neutrons and 24 protons. 5424Cr -chromium
c. an isotope with 14 protons and 16 neutrons. 3014Si -silicon

8. Identify the period, group number (use the modern 1-18, not A and B groups), likely ion charge,
and common family name where each of the following elements are found in the periodic table.
period group ion charge family
a. oxygen 2 16 -2 Chalcogens

b. magnesium 3 2 +2 Alkaline Earth Metals

c. potassium 4 1 +1 Alkali metals
d. iodine 5 17 -1 Halogens
e. radon 6 18 0 Noble gases

9. List the all the elements that exist as diatomic elements. Give the name and the formula for each.
-Hydrogen -H2
-Nitrogen -N2 Mnemonics:
-Oxygen -O2 BrINClHOF
-Fluorine -F2 Or
-Chlorine -Cl2 “Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer”
-Bromine -Br2
-Iodine -12
10. Using the periodic table, determine if each of the following is a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid. In
addition, give the element symbol for each.
a. rubidium: metal, Rb
b. bromine: nonmetal, Br
c. bismuth: metal, Bi
d. barium: metal, Ba
e. silicon: metalloid, Si
f. plutonium: metal, Pu
f. arsenic: metalloid, As
