Tutorial 5 Solid Geometry

This tutorial from M.E.S. Wadia College of Engineering covers solid geometry topics including spheres, cones, and cylinders. It presents problems related to tangential planes to spheres, external tangency of spheres, orthogonality of spheres, and equations of right circular cones and cylinders. The document includes specific conditions for each geometric shape and asks for the derivation of their equations.

Tutorial 6:Solid Geometry (Spheres, Cones, and Cylinders)

Section I: The Sphere

1. Show that the plane 2x − y − 2z = 4 is tangential to the sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 + 2x −
6y + 1 = 0. Also, find the coordinates of the point of contact.

2. Prove that the two spheres x2 + y 2 + z 2 − 2x + 4y − 4z = 0 and x2 + y 2 + z 2 + 10x +

2z + 10 = 0 touch each other externally. Find the point of contact.

3. If the sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 + 2λx + 3λy + 4λz − 1 − 5λ = 0 cuts the sphere x2 + y 2 +

z 2 + 3x − 3y + 3z − 56 = 0 orthogonally, find the value of λ.

Section II: The Right Circular Cone

4. Find the equation of the right circular cone whose vertex is at the origin (0, 0, 0),
the axis is the line x1 = y1 = z1 , and the semi-vertical angle is 30◦ .

5. Find the equation of a right circular cone given the following conditions:

ˆ Vertex: (1, 1, 1)
ˆ Axis: x−1
1
= y−1
2
= z−1
3
ˆ Semi-vertical angle: π/4

6. Find the equation of a right circular cone whose vertex

is at (0, 0, 10), the axis is
the Z-axis, and the semi-vertical angle is cos−1 √25 .

Section III: The Right Circular Cylinder

7. Find the equation of a right circular cylinder of radius 4 whose axis is the line
x+1
1
= y+1
−1
= z+1
1
.

8. Find the equation of a right circular cylinder of radius 6 whose axis passes through
−1 √1
the origin and has direction cosines √13 , √ 3
, 3.

9. Determine the equation of a right circular cylinder of radius 2 where the axis passes
through the origin and has direction ratios (1, −1, 0).
