Valorization of Coconut Shell Waste into Activated
Carbon-Based Eco-Ink and Sustainable Bricks
Abstract
This paper presents a sustainable valorization pathway for coconut shell waste by converting it into
activated carbon, processing it into eco-friendly carbon ink, and further utilizing the carbon slurry in
the production of sustainable bricks. The approach promotes circular economy principles by
transforming agricultural waste into high-value construction materials. The study highlights
preparation methods, material properties, environmental benefits, and potential industrial
applications.
1. Introduction
Coconut shells are abundant agricultural waste materials with high carbon content and low ash
composition. Improper disposal leads to environmental concerns. Valorization converts this waste
into valuable products while reducing environmental impact.
2. Methodology
Step 1: Carbonization of cleaned and dried coconut shells at 400–600°C in limited oxygen. Step 2:
Activation using steam or chemical agents (e.g., KOH) to enhance porosity. Step 3: Grinding
activated carbon into fine powder. Step 4: Preparation of eco-ink by mixing carbon powder with
binder and solvent. Step 5: Mixing carbon slurry with soil/fly ash and binder to mold and cure
eco-bricks.
3. Material Characterization
• Surface area analysis (BET method) • Porosity measurement • Ink viscosity testing • Compressive
strength test of bricks • Water absorption test • Thermal conductivity analysis
4. Sustainability Benefits
• Agricultural waste utilization • Reduced landfill disposal • Replacement of petroleum-based carbon
black • Improved brick insulation properties • Carbon sequestration in construction materials
5. Conclusion
The valorization of coconut shell waste into activated carbon-based ink and eco-bricks
demonstrates a sustainable and economically viable circular model. This approach integrates waste
management, material science, and green construction technologies.
