You can also buy a DSLR camera in store from technology stores such as Currys. The camera ranges
between £280 to £2000 depending on the quality and make of the camera. This makes the DSLR
camera one of the most expensive items needed but also the most essential.
A DSLR camera is important for magazine production and is an essential part of the process, this is so
it can capture the highest quality images to make the finished magazine product look its best while
remaining professional.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is an image editing software that allows you to make any type of adjustments and
edits to the image/product you want to change or enhance. You can make edits such as increasing or
decreasing the brightness, saturation or even add filters.
Adobe Photoshop also offers advanced editing tools and AI features such as generative AI tools for
automatic image enhancements and creative composition.
Adobe photoshop is needed for magazine production to keep your photos looking neat and
professional and to give the image a visual appeal. An adobe photoshop subscription can cost £9 per

Desktop Publishing Software

A desktop publishing software is a software program which is used for the creative and editing of a
magazine. An example of a desktop publishing software is QuarkXPress. QuarkXPress is a software
that allows users to create and edit complex page layouts. It is particularly suited for graphic
designers, publishers and marketing professionals who require precision in print and digital design.
Users can edit or add text and insert a layout for images for their magazine articles and pages, which
is an essential part of magazine production making a desktop publishing software needed for
magazine production.
The pricing of QuarkXPress subscriptions can vary from £200 to £339 per year based on the edition
and subscription model.

Pre Production - Content

In this stage, the editorial team will meet to collaborate, share ideas and make decisions on the
chosen content. The editor will then assign articles to the writers, the writers will then plan their
assigned articles. This stage is important so all the content decisions are made and roles and
responsibilities are established and followed.

Pre Production - Flat Planning

At this stage the team goes through the flat plan for that magazine issue. The flat plan is a page by page
breakdown of the issue of the magazine and shows how it will be layout, this helps the editing team to
easily rearrange and discuss the order of the layout, it also helps the editing team to understand the text
and image placement, making it easier to adjust lengths and layout.

Production
In the production stage the research should be completed for this issue with a draft for the articles
that have been written already. The photoshoots would of been one and archive images will be
ready and chosen if necessary.

Production - Writing and Sub-Editing
This stage is essential due to the magazine pages being created here, they may use preset temples
that will confirm with the magazines house style or use a desktop publishing softwear such as
quark to make the layout of the images and text. The sub editor will check for spelling mistakes and
grammar and may even cut the article down if it is took long or even ask the writer to do this step,
they will also write more for the article if it is too short.

Post Production - Checking Printers Proof
During this stage, the completed magazine pages will be sent to the publishers so they can make a
mock up of the magazine pages which is then sent back to the editors. The editors will then check
this before publishing.

Post Production - Completion and Distribution
In the final stage of production, the editors will give approval of the final copy. All the copies will
then be printed and produced to then be sent to the distributors.

Magazine Job Roles

Sub-editor
A sub-editor in magazine production ensures that the content is accurate and clear and is ready for
publication. This means they have multiple talks such as checking that the article is correct and does
not break any laws such as copyright, checks for any grammatical errors and makes sure that it is
consistent and makes sense. They also have to make sure that the structure of the magazines and any
sentences are adjusted in order to make them easier to read.

Photographer
A magazine photographer captures a variety of different photographs for a specific magazine issue.
They use their professional camera equipment in order to do this. The role they have in magazine
production is to plan and execute photo sessions for things such as covers, advertisements and more.
They also help brainstorm ideas for photoshoots that align with the editorial vision.
They also work closely with the models to make sure they are looking correct and make sure they
match the magazines aesthetic, tone and what they are publishing. A photographer ensures that high
quality images are being produced and made sure they are acceptable and are allowed to be used in
the magazine.

Journalist
A journalist in magazine production is responsible for creating the written content that informs or
persuades the audience to read the magazine. To do this, they make sure that the articles they produce
are professional, engaging and well structured for the audience as it will hook them into reading the
magazine. They also conduct interviews with people who will feature in the magazine and gather
information about them to put in an article in the magazine. A journalist makes sure that before they
write up an article about a specific topic they research and investigate the topic thoroughly to ensure it
is accurate and liable.
