1. A 5 N stone is dropped down the “bottomless pit” at Carlsbad Caverns and strikes the ground with a speed of 30 m/s.
Neglecting air resistance, using the work-energy method, determine (a) the kinetic energy of the stone as it strikes the
ground and the height h from which it was dropped, (b) Solve Part a assuming that the same stone is dropped down a
hole on the moon. (Acceleration of gravity on the moon = 1.62 m/s2)
2. A spring scale A is fastened to the roof of an elevator, and a package is attached to the scale as shown. Knowing that
when the elevator moves upward with an acceleration of 2 m/s2 the spring scale indicates a load of 50 N, Using
Newton's 2nd law, determine (a) the weight of the package, (b) the load indicated by the spring scale when the elevator
moves downward with an acceleration of 3 m/s2.
3. A 100N collar slides without friction along a vertical rod as shown. The spring attached to the collar has an undeflected
length of 0.10m. and a constant of 520 N/m.
If the collar is released from rest at position 1, determine its velocity after it has moved 0.15m to position 2.
