Electronics Unit 1 & 2 - Simple Notes + Q&A;

1. Evolution of Electronics: From vacuum tubes → transistors → IC → modern chips. Smaller,

faster, efficient.

2. Active vs Passive: Active control current (diode, transistor). Passive store energy (resistor,
capacitor).

3. Impact: Faster communication, smart devices, automation.

4. Silicon: Widely used because stable, cheap, handles heat well.

5. Intrinsic vs Extrinsic: Pure semiconductor vs doped semiconductor.

6. PN Junction: P-type + N-type join → depletion region formed.

7. Drift vs Diffusion: Drift = due to electric field. Diffusion = due to concentration.

8. Biasing: Forward = ON, Reverse = OFF.

9. Half Wave Rectifier: Converts AC to DC (only half cycle).

10. Peak Voltage: Vout ≈ Vin - 0.7V (for silicon diode).

Rectifier Parameters: Average, RMS values represent output.

Full Wave & Bridge: Uses full signal, more efficient.

LED: Converts electrical energy → light.

Photodiode: Converts light → electrical energy.

BJT Regions: Cutoff (OFF), Active (Amplify), Saturation (ON).

CE Configuration: High gain, most used.

Comparison CE/CB/CC: CE high gain, CB low, CC medium.

Relation: β = α / (1-α)

Transistor as Switch: ON/OFF operation.

Amplifier: Boosts weak signals.

MOSFET: Voltage controlled device, low power.

BJT vs MOSFET: BJT current controlled, MOSFET voltage controlled.

VLSI Flow: Wafer → oxidation → doping → etching → packaging.

Quick Cheat Sheet:

Silicon = best semiconductor

Forward bias = ON, Reverse = OFF

Half wave = half signal, Full wave = full signal

LED = light, Photodiode = sensor

BJT = current control, MOSFET = voltage control
