BALTIC PICK UP INKLE WEAVING
SLAVIC PATTERNS
ALBUM
7 - 21 PATTERN THREADS
Dear friend!
This album includes 27 patterns for inkle weaving in Baltic Pick Up
technique from 7 to 21 pattern threads.
This album does not teach how to weave on the inkle loom or back-strap
loom; it gives you Slavic style ornaments, which you can use for your
projects.
If you are not familiar with basics of inkle weaving, you should start
from other tutorials. It is very easy to find many good videos about basics
of inkle weaving in YouTube. When I got my inkle loom, I learned to use
it by YouTube videos too. Search and find what is best for you.
Anyway, in order to weave a band in Baltic Pick Up technique you
need:
An inkle loom (or a backstrap loom, or a rigid heddle)
Yarn – thick cotton yarn works best on the inkle loom
Scissors

Samples of edges
Usually Slavic bands have from left and right sides some edges.
The easiest way to make edges is to use plain weaving. Here are
some samples, which you can use for your edges from left and right.
H - heddled row, U - unheddled row. The plain weaving pattern makes by
repeating of these 2 rows.

Experiment with colors and combinations of edges. If you do not need
color edges, simple start and finish your pattern with several background
threads.
Setting the loom for Baltic Pick Up pattern
1. Count how many pattern threads the pattern has.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 This pattern has 7 pattern threads
2. Choose the colors for your project - for the pattern and for the
background. I will take red - for the pattern (p), white for the background (b).
3. Set the inkle loom in this order, as you can see it has 7 pattern threads
like my ornament:
H b b b p b b p b b p b b b
U b p b b p b b p b b p b
Before the 1-st pattern thread and after the last one I usually have 3 or
4 background threads to separate pattern from the edges. If your ornament
has more threads - you set the loom in the same order (1 pattern thread, 2
background threads…) for the needed quantity of pattern threads.
The process of weaving pick up patterns is better to see on video - you
can find many videos searching for "Inkle weaving Baltic Pick Up" in
YouTube.
Experimenting with color combinations for the pattern, background, and
edges you can receive beautiful accessories to match your dresses - such as
belts, headbands, bag straps, hatbands, etc.
