BIOMASS
ENERGY

HOW CAN IT HELP?
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever wondered what would we do once we ran
out of fossil fuels? Sure, there are solar and wind energies,
but what if the Sun isn’t shining, or the wind isn’t blowing?
These aren’t very reliable sources, so scientists came up
with something brand new: Biomass energy. Biomass
energy is reliable and it’s renewable. After all, there is not
one place on this planet where there are no plants and
animals. So let’s get started.
WHAT IS BIOMASS?
Biomass is a type of renewable energy that
uses organic matter to create electricity and
other fuels. Some examples of biofuels are
ethanol, biodiesel, algae, and more. Biomass
energy plants burn biomass (organis matter)
creating heat. That heat turns water into
steam, which flows into a turbine and spins
the genarator, creating energy. That energy
is transported to homes and other facilities
that need electricity.
WHAT ARE SOME PROS AND CONS OF BIOMASS?
PROS CONS
It is readily available all over the earth It requires a lot of energy to produce.
Biofuels can burn much cleaner than Large-scale biomass energy plants can
other fuels require significant land space for
cultivation and processing.
Biomass is a renewable resource that
can be replenished through sustainable Air pollution from biomass combustion
management practices, also making it can pose health risks, especially in areas
a more reliable energy source. with poor air quality.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
Conservation is the prevention of prevention of wasteful use of a
resource. For example, you can help by growing your own vegetables and
fruits, or by planting a tree. Your new plants and trees will help to remove
the greenhouse gas CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) from the air. If you grow some
of your own food, you will also help to prevent more CO2 from entering
the air from the fossil-fuel-burning trucks, planes and ships that transport
your food to you from far away which increases air pollution. Another
example of this is walking or riding your bike instead of taking a car
everywhere. Even a 2-mile car trip puts 2 pounds of CO2 into the
atmosphere. If you must ride in a car, just carpool with other people.
