CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study

An internship is a kind of a temporary position for a student or some trainee who wants
to gain work experience and is working with or without payment while studying at the
same time. The internship program is designed to provide students engaged in a field
experience with an opportunity to share their insights, to explore the links between
students’ academic preparation and their field work, and to assist participants in
developing and carrying out the major research project which will serve to culminate
their internship experience.

This internship report is conducted as the requirement of Bachelor of Information

Management an undergraduate academic degree program at Tribhuvan University, for
the fulfillment of the 3-credit hour internship. Tribhuvan University requires each
student to undergo right weeks internship in an organization to gain real world, practical
knowledge which benefits the students like us to flourish. The prime objectives of the
internship are to be familiar with the organizations culture and day to day operation that
occur in the organization and observe so that the theoretical knowledge we learnt in the
college could be utilize practically. The document contains information about the
organization and the responsibilities performed throughout the internship period. More
than a plan account of tasks, objectives of this text is to reflect upon the experience
collected during the internship from the perspective of a BIM student. An internship
can be an excellent way to try out a certain way to try out a certain career.

An internship is a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students

and graduates exposure to the working environment, often within a specific industry,
which relates to their filed of study. Internship gives a valuable experience which shows
reactiveness and dedication for better career prospects. An internship is a period of
work experience offered by an organization for a limited period. Internship are used to
determine if the intern still has an interest in that field after the real-life experience. An
internship can be used to create a professional network that can assist with letters of
recommendation or lead to future employment opportunities. From the student
perspective, an internship assists with career development by providing real work
experiences that provide students to develop professional skills and competencies.

more than any other industry or economic facet, has an increased productivity,
particularly in the developed world, and therefore is a key driver of global economic
growth. IT is computer-based hardware and software systems and communication
systems to enable the acquisition, representation, storage, transmission, and use of
information. Successful implementation of IT is dependent upon being able to cope
with the overall architecture of systems, their interfaces with humans and organizations,
and their relationships with external environments.

The IT industry is now one of the fastest growing industry sectors in the world. The IT
industry is known both for large risks and for the possibility of large returns on
investment. IT industry is the collection of firms providing the different products and
services digitally. IT workers can specialize in fields like software development,
application management, hardware or desktop support, server or storage administrator
and network architectures etc. Common type if IT careers is: Chief Information, Chief
Technology Officer, IT director, System Administrator, Application Manager and
Developer etc. Software development is becoming a most powerful field in IT because
of the more popularity of handheld devices and emergence of E-Commerce, E-Banking,
E-Share Market.

2.2 Brief Introduction of IT Industry in Nepal

The installation and operation of Main Frame IBM-1401 computer in 1971 in the NCC
at Kathmandu in 1971 for the National population census, saw the advent of Electronic
Data Processing Technology in Nepal, NCC was established with the purpose of giving
computer related services to government bodies, developing computer manpower and
enhancing computer consciousness. Later on, NCC used ICL-2950/10 Main Frame
Computer, a DG Mini-computer, a Prime Mini-Computer. Now there is an IT ministry
itself in the government level and NIC under the ministry, instead of NCC to advise
and formulate National level IT polices and plans. Telephone Service exchanges was

5
established by NTC in 1960 in Kathmandu valley. Since 1960 to 2004, the state-owned
NTC, also now known as Nepal Telecom. The credit for introducing internet among
the people mainly goes to the private sector. Although the internet was initially limited
only to email services in 1955 a company Mercantile Communications finally started
the internet services in the country. In 1998, NTA a telecommunications regulatory
body was formed as per Telecommunications Act 1997. It holds power to issue license
to the ISPs in Nepal.

2.3 Present Scenario

Meanwhile, the number of internet users has increased by considerable amount. While
it was just about 0.2% of the total population in the year 2000 who had access to
internet, it has increased to about 2.2% by the year 2010 (Source: ITU). The
advancement in technology due to advent of smartphones and tablet PCs has helped to
increase the public awareness and raise their interest towards technology to a great
extent. And it can be felt in the latest statistics of internet users in the country (for the
year 2012). The number, according to NTA has increased to more than 4 million now
(which also includes the number of people accessing internet via GPRS and CDMA).

Today’s society is relying much on the use of technology and this has indeed created
the demand of experts in the field on IT. IT professionals perform a variety of functions
such as IT Disciplines and competencies that ranges from installing applications to
designing complex computer networks and information databases. As a developing
country Nepal has availed of the opportunity to rapidly develop various sectors such as
education, health, agriculture, tourism, trade, among others, using IT. Also for the
development of country IT can play vital role. So, good policies on software
development are to be maintained by the government and also involvement and
investment on this field has to be increased. Currently there are many IT companies
established during past decades, but due to lack of effective regulation body from
government and the political instability of the country most of the company are on the
stage of collapse. Also, there are some IT companies that become success to establish
their own renowned name in the Nepal IT market. Some of the well-known IT
companies of Nepal are:

• F1 Soft International Pvt. Ltd.

6
• Deerwalk services Pvt. Ltd.
• Logpoints Nepal.
• Digital Network Solutions.
• AusNep IT Solutions.

CHAPTER FOUR: ANALYSIS OF ACTIVITIES

4.1 Analysis of action performed

During eight weeks internship at BOKCML, I worked in IT department and spend all
the time of internship period in this department. IT department is an innovative and
seeking for new innovations. So, the objective was to make repetitive tasks easier and
faster. Thus, we landed on RPA automation flow through use of different tools and
techniques. We are living in 21st century, by which to compete and remain in the
competitive environment new trends and tools are to be integrated. This is also
applicable in the world of software system. The current market is fast growing market,
day to day repetitive task can be made easier with the development of automation by
which the efficiency of workers or employees will increase.

BOKCML is still using employees for doing repetitive daily task manually. By which
the efficiency of employees and organization is getting lack. Due to employee finding
difficult to perform daily routine task, especially in this era of technology. To expand
my knowledge and gain real time work experience me and my IT department head
decided to make RPA automation by which software robots will performs the repetitive
daily routine task.

4.2 Introduction to Robotic Process Automation

Robotic process automation, also known as software robotics, uses automation

technologies to mimic back-office tasks of human workers, such as extracting data,
filing in forms, moving files, data scraping etc. It combines APIs and UI interactions to
integrate and perform repetitive tasks between enterprise and productivity applications.
By deploying scripts which emulate human processes, RPA tools complete autonomous
execution of various activities and transactions across unrelated software systems. This
form of automation uses rule-based software to perform business process activities at a
high-volume, freeing up human resources to prioritize more complex tasks. RPA
enables decision makers to accelerate their digital transformation efforts and generate
a higher return on investment from their staff.

13
4.3 Tools Used

For the creation of automation flow we decided to use Microsoft Power Automate as
development environment and the language used by this is Robin Script Based
Language.

4.3.1 Microsoft Power Automate

Microsoft Power Automate is a tool that allows to build and execute flows, which can
automate and streamline any repetitive tasks. It has the ability to connect to wide variety
of applications can also contain complex logic like conditions or loops. It is also
frequently used to develop RPA within businesses. Almost any repetitive task can be
replaced by Microsoft Power Automate. This is intelligent cloud-based solution uses
triggers and actions to create chain reactions within a workflow so that repetitive,
manual and time-consuming tasks are accomplished without human intervention

4.3.2 Robin Script Based Language

Robin script-based language is a programming language designed specifically for

building RPA software bots. While there are several proprietary tools to build RPA
scripts, with Robin you have a free programming language designed to build your own
automation, or software bots. It was developed with three things at its core: simplicity,
ease of use and extendibility. Robin is really easy to learn. Its syntax is pretty straight
forward. Everything happens through modules and actions.

4.4 Automation Flow

Automation flow is an approach to make the flow of tasks across repetitive work-related
activities perform by software bots. Simple or complex processes can be triggered at
regular times of day by the use of automation. By the use of Microsoft Power Automate
and Robin Script Based Language different automation flows was created to solve
repetitive tasks to be performed in the organization. The following are some RPA
automation done during my internship periods:

14
4.4.1 Data Scraping

Data scraping, also known as web scraping is the process of importing information from
a website into a spreadsheet or local file saved on the PC. Likewise, we had a task to
scrap the information of meroshare clients of BOKCML from MeroShare website and
dumping in excel sheet. Which was almost 27,000 of datas. The information of account
renewal or not by the clients of BOKCML in MeroShare has to be collected. As, fiscal
year was coming near to keep the updates and inform the clients.

Fig 4.4.1.a: Automation flow for data scraping

Fig 4.4.1.b: Automation flow for data scraping

15
Fig 4.4.1.c: Automation flow for data scraping

4.4.2 Meroshare Registration

Meroshare registration is also a repetitive task in BOKCML, from more than 90
branches of BOK the daily request for meroshare registration will be above 100. To
automate this new flow was made. The details for registration were always written in
spreadsheet and the results of registration are written in excel by the bot itself.

16
Fig 4.4.2.b: MeroShare Registration Flow

Fig 4.4.2.c: MeroShare Registration Flow

17
Fig 4.4.2.d: MeroShare Registration Flow

4.4.3 Approve MeroShare

After the registration of MeroShare for clients DP Head must approve by checking the
details, daily 100+ accounts must be approved by DP Head so for that also we have
created automation flow.

Fig 4.4.3.a: MeroShare Approval Flow

18
Fig 4.4.3.b: MeroShare Approval flow

4.4.4 Webcds Automation

One of the daily routine tasks of IT department in BOKCML is to download files from
Webcds and Store it into DP-Secure server. For easiness we have created automation
flow for this too. Where bots download necessary files from Webcds.

4.4.5 Bulk SMS to clients

SMS to clients must be sent after the registration of MeroShare account let to know
about the registration of MeroShare and DeMat account. So, for that we have created
automation flow.

4.6 Experience and Observed Gap

Studying sitting inside the class room and working in an organization with real-world
problem is far different. All the knowledge we gain from the theoretical books and from
teachers is not sufficient and applicable to the real words. Somehow knowledge is with
us and some we have to gather from the organization. The internship program is the
best on the job method for the implementation of theoretical knowledge to the practical
knowledge. In real IT world practical knowledge plays an important role than a
theoretical knowledge. Study is far easy than applying it to the real-world works. Not
only about the degrees but also its about skills generation new idea formations.

CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSION AND LESSON LEARNT

5.1 Conclusion

The eight weeks of internship in BOKCML was really worthwhile and had a memorable
experience. In review this internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience.
One main thing that I have learned through this internship is time management skills as
well as self-motivation. The exposure forms the internship was truly precious for me
who contributed a lot to expand my knowledge on merchant banking, familiarized me
with the working environment, organizational norms and culture, organizational
structure that enhanced my interpersonal skills, professional skills, time management
and developed some sort of confidence in me. After doing internship, I have been able
to acquire practical skills like analyzing and collecting requirements, documentation,
research, innovate and learning new thing that makes easier life. There is a saying in IT
don’t work hard work smart. By this motive I was eager to learn RPA not only learning
but also applicable for the real world. In other part of my life or coming future this
learning will definitely make me easy for doing my tasks anywhere anytime.

5.2 Lesson Learnt

Working two months at BOKCML is one of the great experiences, which will be very
helpful in the future. I had learnt how the different positions in organization works.
How the organization handles all the process of problems in smooth and unique way.
Some of the core findings during the internship period are:

• Coping with real world and practical environment.

• Time management was the most learnt thing by me.
• How to co-operate with colleague to solve the arising problems.
• Learnt how RPA is very useful in merchant banking and other repetitive task.
• Not only learning but also using it in real world problem was the most
happening.
• Increase in experience and confidence to deal with the real problem
