WW7 - Rational Functions

The document outlines exercises related to graphing the rational function R(x) = (x+1)(x−3) / (x+1)(x−4). It includes tasks such as finding the domain, vertical asymptotes, holes, horizontal asymptote, y-intercept, x-intercepts, creating a sign diagram, and sketching the function. Emphasis is placed on clarity and organization in the presentation of work.

Written Work #7 - Graphing Rational Functions

Complete the following exercises. Make sure to keep your work clean, organized, and not
cramped together. You will lost points if I can’t read or understand your work.

(x+1)(x−3)
1. Consider the rational function R(x) = (x+1)(x−4) , and answer the following parts.

(a) Find the domain of R(x).

(b) Determine any vertical asymptotes.

(c) Determine any holes1 .

(d) Determine the horizontal asymptote.

(e) Find the y-intercept1 .

(f) Find the x-intercepts1 .

(g) Create a sign diagram.

(h) Sketch the function R(x). Start by plotting points (ie. x-intercepts, y-intercept, any holes2 ),
then draw any asymptote lines. Lastly, use the sign diagram to connect-the-dots making
sure to not draw over any vertical asymptotes.

1
Recall this should be written as a point (x, y)
2
Denote on plot with open circle
