Module Overview
Child development is influenced by many factors including family environment, education, technology,
and social experiences. In modern society, children are exposed to new challenges such as
technology use, cyberbullying, social inequality, and family-related issues. These contemporary
issues shape children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.
Understanding these issues helps educators, parents, and communities support children's healthy
development.

I. Technology and Social Media Influence on Children
Technology and social media are now a major part
of children's lives. Many children use smartphones,
tablets, and computers for communication,
entertainment, and learning.
While technology provides benefits, excessive use
may negatively affect children's development.
Positive Effects
• Access to educational resources
• Improved digital literacy
• Opportunities for creativity and learning
• Communication with peers and family
Negative Effects
• Reduced attention span
• Decreased physical activity
• Sleep disturbances
• Increased exposure to cyberbullying
• Lower self-esteem due to social comparison
Studies show that heavy social media use may
affect children’s concentration, emotional well-
being, and social interaction skills.
II. Socioeconomic Factors and Child Development
Socioeconomic status refers to the economic and
social conditions of a family. Children from
disadvantaged backgrounds may face challenges
that affect their development.
Factors Affecting Development
1. Poverty
Children in low-income families may experience:
• Limited access to education
• Poor nutrition
• Lack of learning resources
2. Educational Inequality
Schools in disadvantaged communities may lack:
• Qualified teachers
