Challenges: This challenge was given by [Link] to our technology class.

The challenge was to make a clock, design and decorate it. Students came up with their

own creativity and came up with spectacular designs. The design that I came up with

was a clock that had gears around it and had a hammer and a screwdriver (The design

is displayed below). This challenge was very hard to face, and I had many failures and

triumphs. For this challenge to be successful, I used many materials such as:

1. 12in x 12in plywood x2

2. paint

3. Roman numerals

4. Brass washer

5. Hex nut

6. Hour hand

7. Minute Hand

8. Minute Hand Securing Nut

9. Second Hand

10.Clock template

11.Special nut driver

12.Glue

13.Paper

14.Paint tape

The materials helped me to make my clock beautiful and efficient.

1
Justification: Out of all the clock designs, I chose this geared clock design

because, in our technology class, I thought that gears would symbolize our class really

well. After some intense thinking, I came up with the idea of the geared clock and with

some beautiful color ideas (The coloring was not really good).

Research: I had done a lot of research to find the clock that best suited my liking.

After some research, I stumbled upon a clock that caught my eye. I researched those

clocks and finally came up with the conclusion that I will make a clock with gears around

it (I know, I know, it’s simple, but it is what I liked and had a fun time doing, and with the

help of [Link]). Before my 6 drawings, I researched more

of what other clocks look like and how they would turn out. I

also researched the materials that they need and estimated

how long it would take for the materials to arrive (Amazon).

There used to be many instruments that would tell the

time, but I will briefly explain 4 types of instruments that tell

the time. [Link]: It is an ancient instrument that tells

the time of day by using the shadow cast by the sun on a

marked surface. Sundial also

relies on the sun’s apparent movement as the Earth

rotates. [Link] clock: It is an ancient instrument that

tells the time of day by the regulated flow of water into or

out of a vessel, using gravity to mark hours. The third

way to measure time is by using a mechanical clock.

Mechanical clocks were invented in the late 13th century, which marked a major shift in

2
timekeeping. Early versions of mechanical clocks used a weight. It was the most

accurate clock until the 1930s. The fourth and the last clock that I would give a brief

description about is the analog clock. The analog clock is a timekeeping device that

displays time by moving hands (Hour hand, Second hand, etc). Analog clocks are very

popular and are used for timekeeping. Before clocks were invented, people had to

invent what time actually was to know about clocks. The Babylonians, Egyptians, and

Chinese invented time.

Drawing: Before I started my construction, I had to draw some clocks, which could

help me identify which clock would look the best. I started with the 6 drawings, and after

I carefully chose which clock I liked the most and looked the best. Afterwards, I started

working on my rendered drawing. My rendered drawing is a bigger version of the

drawing I chose, with more texture. The rendered drawing was not drawn really well, but

it gave a rough idea of what the outcome of the clock

would look like. For my scale drawing, I had many

challenges. I had to go back many times and change

some small details to make it perfect. On AutoCAD, I had

to go back and disconnect some important lines just to

make sure my drawing turned out perfect.

Construction: For the construction of this project, I

used a machine called LightBurn. Mr. Persad introduced

us to this machine. It is really easy and efficient to use.

3
After using the light burn machine to cut out my clock, I started to paint my clock. During

the painting phase, I had many issues that came crashing down on me. I am not really

good at painting, and I saw that my clock turned out horrible. After some thinking, I

decided to flip my clock and paint the other side, which was way easier. Another

problem that I faced was the middle of my clock. I had a hammer and a screwdriver

right in the middle and on the same layer, which made painting a million times harder.

After showing [Link], he gave me the idea to make the hammer and screwdriver on

another layer(goes on top of the clock). After making it on another layer, it turned out

perfect. It came out beautifully, and it was ready to have the Roman numerals and the

hands on it. With the amazing help of [Link], I finished my clock, and I really like

how it turned out! Thank you again, [Link]!

Modifications: To make my project outstanding and the way I want it to look, I had

to make many modifications. One of the modifications was to make the hammer and

screwdriver into another layer. That one thing made my clock look from a 6/10 to a 9/10.

Another modification that I made was painting. If I were to take a picture of my clock on

the other side, you would see a mess. I came up with the idea to just turn my clock and

paint from a cleaner side.

Final Analysis: I really had a fun time. I liked how my clock turned out; it turned out

the way I expected it to. During this project, I learned many things that I never knew

about. One thing that I learned about was to use AutoCAD more advanced, work with

wood, make a clock, and use LightBurn. During this project, I socialized and made

some new connections. Many students helped me, and I helped them as well. Another

thing that I learned that would help me in my future is responsibility and organization.

4
Responsibility and organization play a really big role in many projects. During this

project, somehow “someone” had hidden my clock, and I didn’t know where it was. I

was looking for it for a whole class, and thanks to [Link]’s help, I was able to find

the clock and move on.

Personal Reflection: To conclude everything, I had a lot of fun during this project. I

was able to learn new skills and also strengthen them as well. This project taught me

how to be more responsible for my things and be really organized. If I were to do this

project all over again, I would have made the hammer and screwdriver on a different

layer at the start, so it would have saved me way more time. Also, another thing that I

would have done differently would be making my clock’s circle reflective(shiny kind of).

In general, this project was amazing and thanks to [Link] for helping me when I was

stuck. Thank you for giving us the materials needed and the opportunity to be able to do

this type of project. I would have done this project again 100 times, and I wouldn’t get

tired of it. Without [Link], this project would have been a fail.

Thank you, [Link]

Sincerely [Link]
