Respected Sir/Madam,
I, Esha Singh, a student of the 1st Year (Semester 1), Department of English,
am writing this on behalf of the students of our batch. We are eager to take an
initiative that goes beyond our regular classroom lectures and contributes to
the academic environment of our prestigious institution.
As we have recently joined this college under the University of Calcutta’s
curriculum, we have been deeply inspired by the rich literary history and the
intellectual culture that our college represents. To further this spirit, we wish
to organize a one-day Student Literary Seminar titled “Voices of the Soil: A
Study of Modern Literature".
Why We Want to Organize This
Entering college marks a significant transition from school-level learning to a
more analytical and research-oriented approach. We believe that a seminar is
the best platform to:
• Encourage Critical Thinking: It will allow us to look at our syllabus
not just as chapters to be memorized, but as texts to be debated and
discussed.
• Develop Public Speaking: Many of us possess great ideas but lack the
confidence to present them. This seminar will provide a safe and
supportive space for students to overcome stage fright.
• Foster Peer Learning: Hearing perspectives from fellow students often
helps in understanding complex themes in a way that is relatable and
memorable.
Proposed Plan
We have already discussed this idea with our Departmental Head and several
professors, who have kindly offered their verbal encouragement. Our tentative
plan for the day includes:
1. Paper Presentations: Students will present short, 5-10 minute papers
on various literary movements, authors, or specific poems/prose included
in the CU Semester 1 syllabus.
2. Panel Discussion: A moderated session where a group of students will
discuss a central theme, followed by an open Q&A session for the
audience.
3. Creative Segment: A small portion of the event dedicated to original
poetry or short story readings by the students.
Logistics and Requirements
We are committed to ensuring that this event does not disrupt the regular
academic schedule of the college. We propose to hold the seminar on next
Monday 23.02.2026 starting from 1:00 PM after the main lecture hours are
over.
For this purpose, we humbly request:
• The use of the College Seminar Hall or the Auditorium for
approximately three hours.
• Access to basic audio-visual equipment (Projector and Microphone).
• Your presence, if your schedule permits, to inaugurate the session and
motivate us with a few words.
Our Commitment
We understand the responsibility that comes with organizing such an event. I
assure you that the student body will maintain the utmost discipline and
decorum. We have formed a small committee of volunteers who will be
responsible for the setup, cleanliness, and smooth conduct of the seminar. No
external guests or speakers will be invited without your prior written approval,
as we want this to be a purely "by the students, for the students" initiative.
Under the guidance of our teachers, we want to make this seminar a tradition
that helps first-year students integrate better into the academic life of Calcutta
University.
We are hopeful that you will look upon our request with kindness and grant us
the permission to move forward with the preparations. This opportunity would
mean a lot to us as we begin our journey in higher education.
