Energy Method

The document discusses concepts of potential energy, complementary energy, and strain energy in the context of mechanics of materials. It introduces Castigliano's theorem and its application to determine deflections in elastic systems under external forces. Additionally, it covers the calculation of strain energy due to axial forces, bending moments, torque, and shear forces.

Castigliano’s Theorm
 In case of external forces acting on a system subjected to
deflections which are small, if the total complementary energy
(𝑈 ∗ ) of the elastic system is expressed in terms of the loads,
the in-line deflections at any particular loading point is
obtained by differentiating 𝑈 ∗ w. r. t. the load acting at that
point.
