Famous Power Stations in Bangladesh

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (Bengali: রূপপুর পারমাণবিক বিদ্ুুৎ ককন্দ্র) is a
2.4 GW nuclear power plant currently under construction in Bangladesh. It consists of two
1200 MW VVER-1200 reactors. The nuclear power plant is being constructed at Rooppur
in Ishwardi Upazila on the bank of the river Padma, about 160 km northwest of Dhaka. It will
be the country's first nuclear power plant, and
the first of the two units is expected to become
operational in 2026.

Fuel Type: Uranium (U-235)

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 02

Barapukuria Power Station

Barapukuria Power Station is located near Durgapur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. It consists of two
125-megawatt units and one 275-MW unit. This coal-fired power station was commissioned
in 2006, and is operated by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). There are
three units of the plant, operated by BPDB, which can generate a combined 525 megawatts
of electricity. Two units can generate
250MW power together and third unit
can generate 275MW power which is
synchronised with national since late
December 2017.

Capacity: 525 MW

Output: 240-285 MW

Fuel Type: Coal

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 03
Rampal Power Station
The Rampal Power Station (Bengali: রামপাল বিদ্ুুৎ ককন্দ্র) is a 1320 megawatt coal-
fired power station currently under construction at Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat
District in Khulna, Bangladesh. The
power plant, being constructed over 1834
acres of land, is situated 14 kilometers
north of the world's largest mangrove
forest Sundarbans, which is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. It will be the
country's largest power plant.

Capacity: 1320 MW

Output: 400–660 MW daily from a unit

Fuel Type: Coal

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 2

Payra Power Plant

The Payra 1320 MW thermal power plant is a 1,320 megawatt coal-fired power station built
in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali District in southern Bangladesh. It is a joint venture
between the North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (NWPGCL)
and China National Machinery Import and
Export Corporation (CMC). Till May 2023,
this plant was producing 700 to 1000
megawatts of electricity every day.

Capacity: 1320 MW

Output: 400–660 MW daily from a unit

Fuel Type: Coal

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 2
Ashuganj Power Station
Ashuganj Power Station is located near to the Titas Gas field and at the bank of
river Meghna, Bangladesh. It consists of 1647 megawatt units. An agreement was signed in
1966 with a foreign construction company to establish a Thermal Power Plant in Ashuganj.
It is owned and operated by Ashuganj
Power Station Company Ltd.

Capacity: 1,876 MW

Output: 400–660 MW daily from a unit

Fuel Type: Coal

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 2

Ghorashal
Ghorasal power station is an operating power station of at
least 1045-megawatts (MW) in Palash, Narsingdi, Dhaka,
Bangladesh with multiple units, some of which are not
currently operating. It is also known as Ghorashal.

Capacity: 1,105 MW

Output: Variable (often low or offline due to gas shortage;

some units produced reduced output when running)

Fuel Type: Oil and gas-fired thermal

Load Type: Base Load

No. of Unit: 8 (Operating 4)

Kaptai Dam
Kaptai Dam is on the Karnaphuli River at Kaptai, 65 km (40 mi) upstream
from Chittagong in Rangamati District, Bangladesh. It is an earth-fill embankment dam with
a reservoir (known as Kaptai Lake) with water storage capacity of 6,477 million cubic metres
(5,251,000 acre⋅ft). The primary purpose of the dam and reservoir was to
generate hydroelectric power. Construction was completed in 1962, in then-East Pakistan.
The generators in the 230 MW
(310,000 hp) Karnafuli Hydroelectric
Power Station were commissioned
between 1962 and 1988. It is the
only hydroelectric power station in
Bangladesh.
