MODULE 5

THE CONSTRUCTIVIST PERSPECTIVE

Activity

1. What was the topic?

Answer: Fraction

2. Describe what and how you learned about the topic during preschool/elementary.

Answer: My math teachers during elementary introduced us the fractions using

different colored shapes, printed pictures, flashcards, actual fruits, and some various
objects. Back then, I was feeling excited seeing those colorful aids used by our
teachers. I just realized right now, teachers used that kind of aids to get the attention
and interest of their students.

3. Describe what and how you learned about the topic during high school.
Answer: My math teachers during high school taught us fractions more in situational,
solving on the board or sheets, reporting, research, and valuing. Back then, math
became more challenging and the instructions improved. The visual aids are more in
technology such as using calculator, PowerPoint, and film viewing.

4. Describe what and how you learned about the topic in college.

Answer: This time, I have recalled fractions with our topics in pre-demo teaching. Our
math teacher assigned us topics and had us discussed them with our classmates while
our teachers were observing how we deliver. One of those topics is the fraction, a topic
discussed by my one classmate. Instructions are usually used in solving problems,
PowerPoint presentations, and textbooks. By that demo, I was able to recall fractions
and learn how to discuss them in the future.
Analysis

Why do you think the same topic was taught in the three different levels in school? Cite
three or more reasons in bulleted form.

 Because learners may have forgotten the lesson.

 Because learners may not meet the standards or learning objectives.
 Because learners may not have enough learning and still struggling.

Application

Topic: Matter
Grade/ Year Level of Learner: Grade 3

How will you present the topic on the?

Enactive Level

 I will introduce Matter by letting my pupils hold and play with various objects such
as bottled water as liquid, a book as solid, and a balloon as gas. More
importantly, I will discuss the differences between the objects.

Iconic Level

 I will present Matter by letting my pupils look at pictures in the book. I will guide
them to classified whether the picture is liquid, solid, or gas.

Symbolic is Level

 I will discuss Matter by letting my pupil’s read functions and let them match its
corresponding matter. I also have them and homework to list some objects in
their home that are classified as liquid, solid, and gas.

How will you apply the spiral curriculum approach to this topic?

 I will be able to apply the spiral curriculum approach in discussing Matter by

learning everything that needs to be learned about the topic and know what my
pupils are before the discussion so that I can give my pupils nothing but the best.
I will also improve my teaching strategies and techniques such as using visual
aids. And more importantly, I should provide guidance and have a spiral manner
for my pupils to continue building their learning.

Describe how you can use discovery learning for this topic
 I will be able to use discovery learning in discussing Matter by assigning my
pupils an interactive task such as groupings for them to collaborated and
discover amazing ideas they may gather by talking with their classmates. As well
as having my pupils an independent task to classify Matter for them to encourage
to be initiative. Also, I will designate a situational and valuing task about Matter
for them to form their conclusion. And lastly, I will guide them by giving feedback
and correct their mistakes during discussion for them to have a reflection.

Assessment Task

1. Describe the development of the child’s ability to represent knowledge.

Answer: The development of the child's ability to represent knowledge has three modes
such as enactive representation where a child learns through movements or actions,
iconic representation where a child learns through images, and symbolic representation
where a child learns through abstract symbols.

2. Explain how the spiral curriculum works.

Answer: The spiral curriculum works through learning is strengthened. In this approach,
topics are revisited to strengthen the learner's understanding. I just realized that there
are topics that were tackled in elementary that until high school and college are still
discussed. Teachers are not that just revisiting the topics but they improved their
instructions and increase complexity to the understanding of their students. Additionally,
the new learning is related to previous learning of the learners where teachers should
be strategic to continually build their student's development.

Analysis

1. Why was the advance organizer present before the discussion of the topic?

Answer: I believe there is an advance organizer presented before the discussion

because it will serve as the guide and generality of the topic. It involves important and
highlights ideas and information that are connected from the past lesson.

2. How can the advance organizer help the students?

Answer: I believe learners will be guided by advance organizers, for the whole
discussion. They will have an advanced idea about the topic. Based on my experience
on it, I was able to see the whole flow of the topic in our module. It helped in means of
having a hint what will be learning. It is a mechanism to help to link new learning
material with existing related ideas. I conclude advance organizers help students who
struggle with relating, organizing, and following the instruction.

Assessment Task

1. In your own words, explain Ausubel’s subsumption theory.

Answer: I believe Ausubel's subsumption theory is the process of receiving meaningful

learning that involves generalization and integration. Presenting topics generally and
then gradually ascertain by details. It incorporating new topics and pre-existing ideas.
Additionally, this theory aims to strengthen the student's cognitive learning by using
advanced organizers.

Assessment Task

Write a one-page discussion on how a specific learning theory guides every teacher in
facilitating students’ learning.

Answer:

Constructivism is an important learning theory that educators apply in their

instruction to help their students learn. Moreover, what role does this learning theory
fulfill in facilitating learning?

There are different learning theories that every teacher can utilize to enhance the
classroom and their instructional plan, make it a better learning environment to deal with
and connect to all different types of learners. To sum things up, learning theories
explain how learning and teaching processes should be or should take place. Whereas,
constructivism was one of the learning theories that are crucial to understanding as an
educator since it influences the way students learn. Constructivism learning theory is
based on the idea that students use their prior knowledge as a basis to create their
learning. As well, it focuses on learning as an active process. Teachers who understand
this learning theory also understand that their students will bring their own unique
experiences to the classroom every day. Every teacher will be able to use
constructivism as a guide to help their students construct new ideas through their
previous knowledge.

As a future educator, I believe constructivism learning theory plays a significant role

in facilitating student's learning which serves as a guide to creating a collaborative
environment where students are actively involved in their learning. It is where teachers
are more facilitators than actual instructors. More importantly, they need to adjust their
teaching to match the learner’s level of understanding. I believe that someday, I will be
able to apply this learning theory in facilitating different kinds of student's learning. I
believe through constructivism I will be able to make a successful instruction.

Reflective Analysis

Direction: Write your reflection about the topic in 200 words.

Answer: From the module on The Constructivist’s Perspective, I realized that learning
is an active process. I learned a lot from this module such as Bruner's Constructivist's
Perspective which he provides important concepts in the development of
representations, the spiral curriculum, and discovery learning. I learned that the
development of the child’s ability to represent knowledge has three stages includes
enactive, iconic, and symbolic representation. I realized that instruction needs to be
anchored on the learners’ cognitive capabilities. Also, I learned that curriculum should
be organized in a spiral manner so that the student builds upon what they have already
learned. In a Spiral Curriculum, teachers must revisit the curriculum by teaching the
same content in different ways depending on student’s developmental levels. As well, I
learned Discovery Learning promotes autonomy and independence for every student.
Moreover, I learned that Ausubel, instead of criticizing constructivism, proposed ways of
improving it by the use of advance organizers. His ideas are contained in his theory of
Meaningful Verbal Learning. I realized that the primary way of learning was
subsumption. And lastly, I learned about Gagne's Condition of Learning as a means
through which students acquire learning as behavior that influences by the environment
and their thinking process. Finally, I realized that Constructivism as a learning theory
plays a significant role in facilitating student's learning that serves as a guide to create a
collaborative environment where students are actively involved in their learning. I
believe that I can utilize this learning theory someday in dealing with all different kinds of
student's learning.
