Tutorial - 4
Pile foundation
1) Compare the piles types made of different materials. Enumerate merits and
Demerits of each pile.
2) State the methods of estimating pile capacity. What are the points bearing
capacity and frictional resistance?
3) Explain following methods ofes~ating pile load capacity.
a) Vesic's method
b) Janbu's method
c) Coyle and Castello's method
4) A concrete pile 20m long and 0.4 x 0.4m in c/ s. The pile is fully embedded in
sand for which y = 18 kN/m3 and <p =_30°. Calculate point load Qp, by using
a) . Vesic' s method Ir = Irr = 50
b) Janbu's method n' = 90°
c) Coyle and Castello's method
5) Explain determination of settlement of pile in detail
6) The allowable working load on prestressed concrete pile 25m long that has
been driven into sand is 600kN. The pile is circular in shape with D = 350mm.
Skin resistance carries 300kN of the allowable load, and point bearing carries
the rest.
\Use Ep = 21 x 106 kN/m3
Ep = 25 x 103 kN/m3
ros = 0.35 and ~ = 0.62
Determine the settlement of the pile
'7) State and explain pile driving formulas of determining carrying capacity of
soil.
