Power Electronics Interview Questions (Fresher Level)
1. What is Power Electronics?
Power electronics deals with control and conversion of electrical power using semiconductor devices.
2. What are power semiconductor devices?
Diode, SCR, MOSFET, IGBT
3. What is SCR?
SCR is a controlled semiconductor device. It turns ON with gate pulse and turns OFF when current
becomes zero.
4. Difference between MOSFET and IGBT?
MOSFET: Fast switching, used in low/medium power.
IGBT: High power handling, used in VFD and motor drives.
5. What is Rectifier?
Rectifier converts AC to DC.
6. What is Inverter?
Inverter converts DC to AC.
7. What is PWM?
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controls output voltage by changing pulse width.
8. What is firing angle?
Firing angle is the angle at which SCR is triggered in AC circuit.
9. What are switching and conduction losses?
Switching loss occurs during ON/OFF transition.
Conduction loss occurs when the device is ON.
10. What is VFD?
VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) controls motor speed by changing frequency.
11. Why VFD is used in industries?
Energy saving, smooth starting, speed control, reduced mechanical stress.
12. Why IGBT is used in VFD?
Because it can handle high voltage and high power efficiently.
13. What happens if VFD frequency increases?
Motor speed increases.
14. Applications of power electronics:
Motor drives, UPS, SMPS, Battery chargers, Industrial drives.
