WHAT ARE FOREST?
A forest can be defined as a region with a high
density of tress.
Forest is the habitat for a variety of living beings
including plants, animals and microorganisms.
WHAT IS DEFORESTATION?
Deforestation is the process in which large areas
of forest lands are cleared for various human
activities.
CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION
Clearing land to build house :-
Clearing of forest with the increasing demand for
housing due to the growing population.
Logging :-
Cutting of trees for use as raw material.
Agriculture :-
To provide land for food crops such as rice, wheat etc.
Forest Fires :-
Hundreds of trees are lost every year
due to fire in various portion of the
world. Fire whether caused by man or
nature results in huge loss of forest.
Other Land Uses :-
• Land for mining
• Industrial projects
• Building dams

IMPACTS OF DEFORESTATION
Increased Soil Erosion :-
The loss of trees, which anchor the soil with their
roots, causes widespread erosion throughout the
tropics. Only a minority of areas have good soils,
which after clearing are quickly washed away by
the heavy rains.
Disruption of water cycle :-
As more and more trees get cut down, evaporation
levels are disrupted, drying up the moisture in the
air and throwing off the balance of the water cycle.
Climate change :-
When deforestation occurs, much of the carbon stored by
trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon
dioxide, which contributes to climate change.
Reduced Biodiversity :-
Deforestation can directly lead to biodiversity loss when
animal species that live in the trees no longer have their
habitat, cannot relocate, and therefore become extinct.
Disruption of livelihood :-
People in rural areas depend on forests for fuel for
cooking purposes, food for consumption and income
generation by selling wood or breeding bees to sell
honey.
Deforestation erodes the resources that develop and
sustain the livelihoods of local communities therefore, it
results in malnutrition, poverty and conflicts.
CONTROL OF DEFORESTATION
Role of Government
Implementation of security measures and strict
laws to prevent illegal logging.
Increasing the count and range of forests under
government protection.
Optimizing the management of forests by
banning inefficient agricultural practices.
Launching new reforestation campaigns to
restore deforested lands.
Role of Individuals :-
Reduce – Reducing the amount of paper consumed by
using alternatives wherever possible.
Reuse – Avoid use and throw products to prevent
wastage.
Recycle – Diligently recycle all used wood and paper
products.
