Chapter 2 – Inverse Trigonometric Functions
(Complete Notes)
Inverse trigonometric functions are the inverse operations of trigonometric functions. If sin θ = x, then θ =
sin■¹x. These functions help us find angles when the value of a trigonometric ratio is known.
1. Meaning of Inverse Trigonometric Functions
• sin■¹x (arcsin)
• cos■¹x (arccos)
• tan■¹x (arctan)
• cot■¹x
• sec■¹x
• csc■¹x
2. Domain and Range
• sin■¹x : Domain = [-1,1], Range = [-π/2 , π/2]
• cos■¹x : Domain = [-1,1], Range = [0 , π]
• tan■¹x : Domain = All real numbers, Range = (-π/2 , π/2)
• cot■¹x : Domain = All real numbers, Range = (0 , π)
3. Important Identities
• sin■¹x + cos■¹x = π/2
• tan■¹x + cot■¹x = π/2
• sec■¹x + csc■¹x = π/2
4. Properties
• sin■¹(-x) = - sin■¹x
• tan■¹(-x) = - tan■¹x
• cos■¹(-x) = π − cos■¹x
5. Standard Values
• sin■¹(1/2) = π/6
• sin■¹(√3/2) = π/3
• cos■¹(1/2) = π/3
• tan■¹(1) = π/4
6. Example Problems
• Find sin■¹(1/2) → Answer: π/6
• Find cos■¹(1/2) → Answer: π/3
• Find tan■¹(1) → Answer: π/4
7. Exam Tips
• Remember domain and range values clearly.
• Use identities to simplify expressions.
• Convert inverse trigonometric values into standard angles.
Quick Revision
• Inverse trigonometric functions give the angle for a given trigonometric value.
• sin■¹x + cos■¹x = π/2
• tan■¹x + cot■¹x = π/2
