 Maxwell (late 1800s) predicted that the
speed of light in a vacuum is a constant –
approx. 300,000 km/sec.

Experiments prove speed of light is true regardless of the state of motion of the observer

Anomaly: If Maxwell’s theory is to be consistent with classical mechanics, the speed of

light ought to depend on the speed of the observer. While many experiments were
devised to detect such a dependence, none was ever found.
Einstein realized that either Newton or Maxwell had to be wrong and held on to the anomaly…

He doesn’t give up and holds on to the
problem. In 1905 while working as a patent
office clerk he comes up with the theory of
relativity.

He figured out that the prob. was not

Maxwell’s theory but that it was classical
mechanics that was wrong (something that
has worked for 200 years) – i.e. classical
mechanics do not work at the speed of light!

He had deep sense of the past (i.e. others knowledge – Newton,

Maxwell, etc.) and used it to make history without being bound to it
(that history is always right) – thus a ahistorical history maker
