II. Introduction

Hi there! As you begin to uncover what this learning package has intended for you this
first semester of the Academic Year 2023-2024, allow me to carry you through the basic of
communication. But before we plunge to several communication constructs advanced by
authorities, I’d like that you recall your senior high school days with your English language
teacher who facilitated your navigation toward appreciating and using communication as a tool
for social and developmental undertakings.

In high school, you must have been tasked to perform individual and group presentations
showcasing your oral skills to interpret and convey information. From the series of exercises and
activities you have had, you must have accumulated a very rich knowledge and skill to
communicate because you were told then that the urgency to master communication skills in the
target language is a scaffold to surmount other higher order tasks when you get college. So, as
you are about to face another academic challenges in tertiary education, by now, you are
equipped with those essential skills to communicate with purpose.

Do you agree with the assertions above? If not, then, allow me to refresh your
understanding of communication constructs that every college student should know. Turn to the
next page, please.

III. Inside Contents

I SHOULD KNOW THIS!

Communication is the “process by which individuals use symbols, signs, and behaviors to
exchange information” (O’Hair & Wiemann, 2012, p. 4).

McPheat (2010) suggested that “communication is the art and process of creating and
sharing ideas, and its effectiveness depends on the richness of those ideas” (p.10).

In the book penned by Malyuga and Orlova (2018), both cited what the Defort Dictionary
of Logic (DDL) suggested about communication. DDL advanced the idea that “interaction” is
the same as “communication”. However, Malyuga and Orlova argued that there are some
differences between the two terms,

interaction is commonly understood as a multidimensional phenomenon

that implies mutual interference between social subjects involving the exchange
of activities, knowledge, skills, as well as performance results. Communication,
on the other hand, is viewed as an informative aspects of interaction. (2018, p. 2)

You might have heard of “communication skills” in high school. Your English teacher
might have introduced you to blocks of skills to prepare you to communicate, and these skills are
interesting and challenging at the same time. By definition, communication skills with reference
to O’Hair & Wiemann (2012) are,

behavioral routines based on social understandings; they are used by

communicators to achieve particular goals (such as asking for a raise,
maintaining a relationship, or working successfully as a team member
in an organization). (p. 19)

Do you remember the days when you were tasked to introduce yourself or your friend, to
inquire or ask permission to leave, to begin and end conversation? Do you remember the
conversational dialogue, key words and expressions, and the language forms and functions
endorsed by your English language teachers? You were thoroughly exposed to communication
skills and you might have realized that incorporating new communication skills takes practice.
From the words of Lasater and Stiles (2010), both acknowledged that in developing
communication skills,

We frequently forget this. All too often, we act as if we should be able

to immediately incorporate a new skill without time or effort. We have this
kind of magical thinking where we believe that once we have understood
something conceptually, we will be able to do it; however, there is a
difference between understanding something and doing it. We usually face a
learning curve before we become comfortable with a new way of doing
something. The key to moving through the learning curve and gaining competence
is practice. (p. 33)

PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION FOR FUTURE INDUSTRY PRACTITIONERS (P.A. JAMILARIN, 2025)

I SHOULD KNOW THIS!

Now that you have a newer perspective on the meaning and nature of communication, try
to recall or relearn the essentials of Verbal Communication.

To understand the entirety of Verbal Communication, you have to know what language is
in the context of communication. Language is said to be the “systems of symbols we used to
think about and communicate experiences and feelings” (O’Hair & Wiemann, 2012, p. 98). It is
also governed by grammatical rules and is influenced by various contexts.

When you communicate verbally, you use a target language which is made up of verbal
symbols, the collections of speech sounds combined into words. Words are symbols that have
meanings agreed to by speakers of a language, and these “meanings” are either weighted with
denotative or connotative representation. Denotative is the accepted definition of a word,
otherwise known as the dictionary meaning of words. Connotative refers to the emotional or
attitudinal response associated with words.

When speakers use a direct or explicit meaning of a word, then they converse employing
words in the denotative level by which the meaning can be extracted from dictionary. However,
in communicative context, problems may arise when using denotative meaning especially when
speakers and listeners are not aware that there are multiple meanings in a word out of dictionary
differences, semantic changes, and context. Conversely, when speakers load their speeches with
indirect or implicit representation of a word, then they communicate in the connotative level
which includes all emotional senses associated with the word.

Generally, you can claim that the denotative meaning is the real or authentic
representation of a word, while connotative meaning is the implied representation of a word.

On the next page, take a look at the images, think of their denotative and connotative
meaning, and be able to fill out with ideas the table below each image.

PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION FOR FUTURE INDUSTRY PRACTITIONERS (P.A. JAMILARIN, 2025)

I SHOULD KNOW THIS!

There are five functions of language in the context of communication. These five are also
called “Functional Communication Competencies” (O’Hair & Wiemann, 2012, p. 101) and
consider language as an instrument for:

1. controlling and influencing behaviors or undertakings;

2. informing, including four aspects: questioning, describing, reinforcing, and withholding;

3. expressing feelings such as letting people know how we value them;

4. imagining and communicating a creative idea; and,

5. ritualizing, managing conversations and relationships.

Language as an instrument to communicate helps you in achieving your purpose when

engaged to interpersonal, intrapersonal, group, public, and mass communication. It also plays a
big role in your direction to communicate either in horizontal or vertical approach.

You also vary your style when communicating. In your circle of friends, the first one may
be direct, the second one may be systematic, and the last two may be over spirited or considerate.
Communication Style, as defined by McPheat (2010), “refers to the choices we tend to make
when communicating to others; it involves two basic dimensions: the assertiveness level of our
communication and the emotiveness level of our communication” (p. 31).

McPheat (2010) stressed that you employ communication styles depending on with
whom you are communicating, and difference in communication style can lead to barrier in
communication success.

21
PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION FOR FUTURE INDUSTRY PRACTITIONERS (P.A. JAMILARIN, 2025)

I SHOULD KNOW THIS!

From Verbal Communication, let’s proceed to Nonverbal Communication. Whenever

you hear of nonverbal communication, what comes into your mind? How often do you use
nonverbal behaviors when communicating?

Knapp, et al. (2013) stressed that the term “nonverbal” is commonly used to “describe all
human communication events that transcend spoken or written words” (p.27). When you
interpret nonverbal events and behaviors you use verbal symbols. When you use “nonverbal”
events and behaviors, Knapp, et al. (2013) stressed,

we encode and decode nonverbal behaviors with varying degrees of

awareness and control. There are times when our responses are carefully
planned, and we are very much aware of what we are doing; there are
other times when our responses occur more automatically, and little
conscious planning and awareness is associated with them. (p.27)

Nonverbal Communication, according to Knapp and Hall as cited by O’Hair & Wiemann
(2012), is the process of “intentionally or unintentionally signaling meaning through behavior
other than words” (p.128). This definition encompasses a variety of actions, such as gestures,
tone of voice, and eye behavior, as well as all aspects of physical appearance. Knapp, et al.
(2013) suggested that nonverbal communication should not be studied as an isolated
phenomenon but as an inseparable part of the total communication process.

The use of nonverbal behavior is indispensable. O’Hair & Wiemann (2012) stipulated the
following functions of nonverbal communication:

1. Nonverbal communication reinforces verbal communication in three ways: repeating

(mirroring the verbal message), complementing (reinforcing the verbal message), and
accenting (emphasizing a part of the verbal message).

2. Nonverbal cues can be used for substituting or replacing words.

3. Nonverbal communication also functions as contradicting behavior, conveying the

opposite of your verbal message.

4. Nonverbal cues are used in regulating or coordinating verbal interaction.

5. A feeling of closeness, or immediacy, can be created with nonverbal behaviors.

Mimicry can enhance immediacy if perceived as sincere.

6. Individuals with good nonverbal communication skills may practice deception, with
good or bad intentions, when they attempt to use nonverbal behaviors to convince
others of something that is false.

I SHOULD KNOW THIS!

Departing from Verbal to Nonverbal basics of communication, let’s look into the
theoretical models of communication. But before that, have you ever seen an illustration that
explains how communication is processed and is taking place between the speaker and listener
theoretically? If not, this part will re-introduce you to the three models of communication,
namely, the linear model, interaction model, and the competent communication model.

A. Linear Model

In understanding the linear model, be familiar with the following key words: Sender,
Receiver, Message, Noise, and Channel. Use any of these key words to fill in the blanks in the
figure below.

B. Interaction Model

The Interaction Model expands on the linear model by including “feedback” between
the receiver and sender. In understanding the interaction model, be familiar with these
additional key words: Feedback, Nonverbal Message, Verbal Message, Environment,
Encode, Decode. Use any of these key words to fill in the blanks in the figure below.

C. Communication Competent Model

Communication Competent (CC) model may sound new to you. Like the linear and
interactive, CC also retains the elements found in the aforesaid models, such as the speaker and
receiver both termed as communicators in CC, the channel, feedback, and the encoding and
decoding of the message. What makes CC model different from the other two models?

O’Hair & Wiemann (2012) stressed that CC is transactional,

the individuals (or groups or organizations) communicate

simultaneously, sending and receiving messages (both verbal and
nonverbal) at the same moment in time, within a relational
context, a situational context, and a cultural context. (p. 22)

The CC model takes into account not only the transactional nature of
communication but also the role of communicators themselves—their internal thoughts and
influences as well as the various contexts in which they operate.

In understanding the CC model, be familiar with these additional key words: Behavior,
Cognition, Relational Context, Situational Context, Cultural Context, and Communicator. Use
any of these key words to fill in the blanks in the figure below.

Frames the interaction and determine which messages are considered appropriate and effective,
and it strongly affects our cognitions. (5)_______________________________
