a. Carbon sinks are trees when they are growing, since they absorb high
quantities of carbon dioxide they require to grow a strong trunk and expand its
leaves, while carbon stores are trees when they are already fully grown.
Since they don’t need to keep growing and therefore don't need more carbon
dioxide, they act like stores for the same amount of carbon to maintain itself
through the seasons and its life cycle.
b. Interception occurs when the top of the trees, completely covered in leaves,
acts like an umbrella when it rains, slowing down the return of water to the
surface, and retaining part of it. Surface run-off, on the other hand, is when
more water than the soil is able to absorb falls to the surface, saturating it
completely and leading to the water flowing through the ground, carrying
sediments, until it finds a water body to flow into.
c. A raw material is a crop, mineral, or any material that hasn’t been
manufactured yet and remains at its natural state. It’s the products the
moment they are first extracted. Food is instead an already processed
product made with one or more raw materials, take for example bread, made
with wheat(processed into flour), yeast(also cultivated probably), water and
salt.

When the natural environment, in this case the rainforest, is intact, the
nutrient cycle works just fine: the leaves on the top of the trees absorb most
of the solar energy and water from rainfalls. The trees, additionally, produce
fruits that animals from that habitat use to survive(without mentioning how
insects and other species also benefit from the leaves and branches). When
the organic matter is not taken advantage of by animals, the ground does it
instead, nurturing itself. The leaves also help slow down and retain the
moisture from the rain, letting the ground absorb it steadily.

When rainforest deforestation happens, however, this balanced nutrient cycle


is completely destroyed. No more organic matter and resources from the
trees means many species are erased or moved from their natural habitats,
and that the soil doesn’t have any more nutrients. Also, without the natural
umbrellas from the trees, heavy rainfall hits the ground directly, quickly
saturating it and therefore producing surface run-off and soil erosion. This
water flow can also carry sediments and destroy the topsoil, where most of
the organic matter is. A lot of water is also leaking into the groundwater.
