CE-112L: Engineering Drawing for Civil Engineers (Lab)
Fall 2018
WEEK 7
Three views of an object1
To a drafter, an object is a three dimensional volume enclosed within a series of interconnected planes. Consider the
object shown in the following figure.
We will use the concept of orthographic projection to draw the three basic views, i.e. the front (called as elevation), top
(called as plan), and side views of objects, with the help of their isometric drawings. Isometric drawing is three
dimensional drawing of the object.
You will have to show the reader whether the projections are in first or third angle by drawing its appropriate symbol in
the title block, if it’s applicable to the whole sheet.

Fall 2018
In order to draw the three views of an object, the drawing is divided into four zones, similar to mathematical coordinate
system. Each zone contains one orthographic projection of the object. The fourth zone contains the mitre/miter line,
which is a line drawn at 45 degrees from the intersection of the principal plane lines, placed in front of the top view of
the object, in order to get the side view (either left side or right side) of the object for transferring projectors from top
and front views.
If the RSV is to be called as the FV, then the miter line is to be drawn in the reverse direction, and vice versa.
Now have a look at few sample problems below.
