Production Process

The production process is the making and the stages involved in producing a media
project , which include 3 key stages which are pre production, production and post
production.

● Pre-production- The pre production stage is the preparation of what you are
doing and the research and planning put into the production.

● Production- The production is producing the material you are making.

● Post-production- The post-production is the construction and finishing


touches to the material, this also involves editing.

Magazine production equipment and software

The three main specialised equipment and software needed to make a magazine are
DSLR camera, Photoshop and desktop publishing software.

DSLR camera
The DSLR camera is a camera with a high quality digital
camera used to take detailed and focused photos. This
is needed for magazine production because it can
capture whatever the magazine is advertising with very
good detail and that it makes it clear to the audience
and so the audience can see a good detailed image.
This is needed for magazine production as they are
high quality and they are necessary to produces high
quality work to attract target audiences and this is good
for the audience as you need to make your magazine

Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is a editing software used to create and adjust images, this is useful as
you can better photos which may not look as good without adding more brightness or
contrast to the image. When taking a photo normally there may be something in the
photo you may not like, with Photoshop you can crop people and things out of the
image so you can get the perfect image. This
is needed for magazine production because
the magazine needs to be perfect otherwise it
wont attract the audience. They target

colours this is done in photoshop as you can
editing the saturation and contrast to make
the image more visually appealing. The way

Desktop Publishing Software


The desktop publishing software is called Quark Xpress . This software is used to
help layout text-based products which is useful for editing your text for the magazine.
This is needed for magazine production as it helps layout the articles in the
magazine so everything is in the right place so the audience can find it easy to read
and navagate through the magazine. The way to buy Quark Xpress is by going onto
there official website and buying it from there. This will cost £259 per year .

Magazine production process

Pre Production - content


In this stage this where the additional team meet, this is so they can share ideas
and also make decisions about the content the editor will assign articles to the
writers. The writers will start to plan and research for there desicated articles . This
stage is important because all content decisions are made and roles and
responsibilities are established.

Pre Production - Flat planning
This is the page by page breakdown of that issue of the magazine and how it will
be laidout. The editing team allows them to arrange , discuss the order and the
layout of the magazine . the editing team can adjust the length and layers. They
can also editing the text and the images to improve.

Production
The production is the research that will be completed , and is the process of writing
the article . Its also the process of taking the photoshoots. They will identify if they
need archive images and then source and find them.

Production - writing and sub-editing
The sub editor checks al, the articles for spelling and puncuational issues. Also if
the articles are too long the sub editor will cut it down or ask the writer to cut it
down. The sub editor will check if the article is too short , they will ask the writer to
write more. Its in this stage which desktop publishing software like quark is used ,
this is where they layout the articles and text content. They might use pre set
templates Which goes the magazine house style. This is also where the magazine
are constructed and editied

Post production - checking printers proof
In this stage the final magazine are published and the publishes make a mock up ,
Then they send it back to the ditor to check before they publish it.


Post production - completion and distribution
The editor will give approval of the final copy . Then it will be printed and then
send out to distribution.

Magazine editor
A magazine editor is responsible over seeing the editing process of publication,
ensureing its high quality and the target audience will like it. Such as describe the
different section about golf.

Sub editor
This is the person who checks over all the work once it has been edited, checking
over the writers work checking for any mistakes which the writer has made. And
looking over the images and the different sections of articles.

Graphic designer
The person plays a crucial role as the graphic designer as they make the visual
content that informs the audience about the text by editing all the designs. The
graphic designer uses photoshop to enhance images and improve little details about
the article , such as improving the brightness and contras of the image and
saturation so it becomes more vibrant.
