CHAPTER 4
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the results obtained from the development, implementation, testing,
and evaluation of the proposed Secure Door Lock System using Keypad and Mobile Application
with WiFi Integration. The results are presented objectively and are anchored on the objectives of
the study. This chapter focuses on explaining how the system works, its structure, capabilities,
limitations, and the results of the system evaluation based on the testing procedures and
evaluation tools discussed in Chapter 3.
4.1 Project Description
The capstone project entitled “Secure Door Lock System using Keypad and Mobile
Application with WiFi Integration” was developed to provide a secure, efficient, and
centralized access control solution for residential units such as apartments and
dormitories. The main objective of the study is to design and implement a smart
door locking system that allows authorized users to unlock doors using keypad-
based access codes and mobile application–generated codes, while enabling owners
to monitor access activities in real time.
The developed system integrates hardware components such as a microcontroller,
keypad module, electronic lock, indicators, and WiFi connectivity with a cloud-based
backend using Firebase. The mobile application serves as the interface for user
authentication, access code management, real-time notifications, and access log
monitoring. Once a valid access code is entered through the keypad or generated
via the mobile application, the system processes the request, validates the
credentials through the database, and activates the electronic lock mechanism. An
automatic locking feature is implemented to secure the door after a predefined
delay.
Overall, the system provides a real-time, network-enabled door access solution that
enhances security, accountability, and convenience for owners and tenants, thereby
meeting the intended objectives of the study.
4.2 Project Structure
The project structure presents the detailed operational design of the developed
system, including both the software and hardware components. The system follows
an Input–Process–Output (IPO) structure.
Input
User login credentials from the mobile application
Access codes entered via the keypad
App-generated access codes transmitted through WiFi
Process
Validation of user credentials using Firebase Authentication
Verification of access codes against stored records
Decision logic for granting or denying access
Triggering of electronic lock, indicators, and notifications
Logging of access events into the database
Output
Door unlock or lock action
Visual and audio feedback through LED and buzzer
Real-time push notifications
Access logs viewable through the mobile application
The system architecture consists of three major components:
1. Hardware Layer – responsible for physical access control and user input
2. Software Layer – handles authentication, logic processing, and user
interaction
3. Cloud Layer – manages data storage, synchronization, and notifications
This structure ensures that system operations are synchronized, reliable, and
scalable, as defined in the requirements presented in Chapter 3.
4.3 Project Capabilities and Limitations
Capabilities
The developed Secure Door Lock System demonstrated the following capabilities:
Allows authorized users to unlock doors using keypad-entered or app-
generated access codes
Supports real-time WiFi communication between the mobile application and
lock mechanism
Automatically locks the door after a predefined delay to prevent unauthorized
entry
Records all access attempts with timestamp and status in a cloud database
Sends real-time notifications for successful and failed access attempts
Enables owners to manage users and monitor access remotely
Operates efficiently within the defined performance and security
requirements
These capabilities directly address the objectives of the study by providing a secure
and monitored access control system.
Limitations
Despite its effectiveness, the system has the following limitations:
Requires stable WiFi connectivity for real-time synchronization and
notifications
Limited to Android-based mobile devices
Does not support biometric authentication in its current implementation
Power interruptions may affect operation despite backup power support
Designed for small-scale residential deployment
These limitations define the boundaries of the project and provide direction for
future enhancements.
4.4 Project Evaluation
The evaluation of the Secure Door Lock System was conducted to determine its
acceptability, performance, and quality based on user experience and technical
standards.
4.4.1 System Testing Results
Based on the Alpha and Beta testing procedures discussed in Chapter 3, the system
was tested in both controlled and real-world environments. The results showed that
the system successfully responded to valid access requests within the expected
response time of 2–3 seconds. Access logs were accurately recorded, and
notifications were delivered reliably during testing. Minor issues identified during
testing were resolved through system refinement.
4.4.2 IT Expert Evaluation
IT experts evaluated the system using the ISO/IEC 25010:2011 Software Quality
Model, focusing on functional suitability, performance efficiency, usability,
reliability, security, maintainability, and portability. The evaluation results indicated
that the system met the acceptable standards across all quality characteristics. The
system was found to be technically sound, secure, and suitable for its intended
environment.
4.4.3 User Evaluation
Actual users, consisting of owners and tenants, evaluated the system based on
functional suitability, usability, performance efficiency, and reliability. The results
showed a high level of user acceptance, particularly in terms of ease of use,
responsiveness, and perceived security. Users were able to access the system
without difficulty and found the notification and logging features beneficial.
4.5 Summary of Findings
Based on the results and evaluations conducted, the Secure Door Lock System
successfully met the objectives of the study. The system demonstrated effective
access control, reliable performance, and positive user acceptance. The findings
confirm that the developed system is a viable solution for enhancing residential
security through smart access control technologies.
