What are Hydraulics and Pnuematics?
Hydraulics is a “mechanical function” that operates through the force of liquids.
Usually in hydraulic systems, fluid movement/pressure is either contained or
pumped by hydraulic cylinders moving pistons.
Pneumatics is another type of mechanical function that uses pressurized gases
to affect “mechanical motion based on the working principles of fluid dynamics
and pressure.” In simpler terms, pneumatics is the name given to the act of a
confined, pressurized system that uses moving air. It is similar to the
pneumatic system.
Why Do Backhoes Use Hydraulics?
We already know that backhoes use hydraulics to do heavy lifting in
construction. One of the reasons a backhoe uses a hydraulic system. Hydraulics
are an incompressible fluid that transmits its force from one point to another
so that the front. For example, because water has such a big force, it can allow
the front claw to move more quickly and smoother. The reasons they don’t use
pneumatics is because hydraulics have a higher mass density.
Mahindra Construction has provided us with this definition: “The two variables
that are used for the backhoe is the distance against force. Operating the
backhoes is basically balancing both variables to get the desired results.” The
work is done on pressing down on a piston on the left and the same force
being applied to the right piston.” This is Pascal’s Law at its most simple
explanation. Pushing down on the left piston in turn pushes a certain amount
of fluid to the right piston which is now pushed forward.
If we used this simple principle with gas, here’s what would happen. The
response time of the right piston to react would be significantly slower than
the hydraulics. The operator of the backhoe will need to apply more pressure
for the front and back claws to move.
What Does the Backhoe Do?
The backhoe is known to be similar to an excavator. An excavator “are heavy
construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper (or stick).” Backhoes are
great for the beginning of a construction project. They can move through
tough terrain and move materials too heavy/unsafe for the average human. Yet
the back loader’s capabilities stop there, they aren’t used for heavy duty
digging. Yet, the operator can use the front-loader to move or carry heavier
objects. The backhoe reminds me of a 2 in 1 machine and how there are
multiple options you can use. ***Remember to talk about the diagram on the

What is the Future of The Backhoe?
As the world's job sites for construction start to get smaller by the day, the
advancements in the hydraulic construction machines are progressing everyday
and at an “exceeding fast rate.” Many construction companies are demanding
more small, compact and powerful machines to help them complete their task
at a quicker rate. One company such as JCB has an all purpose-built 1CXT
backhoe-loader, which offers a higher efficiency machine. In the future, they do
want the future of the backhoe to provide comfort and ease of use. The 1CXT
also has a universal quick hitch that’s compatible with a majority of skid steer
attachments. To add, it is easier for operators for trailering and towing it
because of its light weight capacity. There has been more progress for the
excavator and its future than the backhoe. I think the future is looking for a
more simplistic type of machine and not something bulky. For example, they
are now looking to have the backhoe removed because the excavator is now
strong enough to lift heavy loads.
