Tutorial-3

1. A 1500 kVA, 6600 V, three-phase star connected alternator with a resistance of 0.4 Ω
per phase and reactance of 6 Ω per phase, delivers full load current at 0.8 power factor
lagging and at normal voltage. Estimate
a) The active and reactive power output of the alternator
b) Active power input to the alternator
c) The maximum active and reactive power output
d) If the armature resistance of the alternator is neglected, what are the maximum
active and reactive power outputs of the alternator?
2. Two alternators running in parallel supply the following loads (i) 1500 kW at 0.9 power
factor lag (ii) 800 kW at unity power factor (iii) 600 kW at 0.8 power factor lead (iv)
1000 kW at 0.8 power factor lag. The load on one machine is adjusted to 2200 kW at
0.8 power factor lag. Calculate the load power factor of the other machine.

3. A 6.6 kV, three-phase, 50 Hz, star connected alternator delivers 300A at 0.8 power
factor lagging at constant voltage and constant frequency busbars. The synchronous
impedance per phase is 0.5+j8Ω. Find the new values of current and power factor if the
excitation is
a) Increased by 20%
b) Decreased by 15%
4. Two synchronous generators are supplying a common load. Generator 1 has a no-load
frequency of 51.5 Hz and regulation of 1 MW/Hz. Generator 2 has a no-load frequency
of 51 Hz and regulation of 1 MW/Hz. The total load is 2.5 MW at 0.8 power factor
lagging.
a) At what frequency are the generators supplying this load and the power supplied by
each generator?
b) If an additional load of 1MW is to be supplied by these generators, what is the new
supply frequency?
c) If the frequency of the system is to be maintained at 50 Hz while supplying a load
of 3.5 MW, what is the set point of governor in generator 2?
5. A 10 MVA, 10 kV, three-phase, 50 Hz, 1500 r.p.m alternator is paralled with the infinite
bus. The moment of inertia of the rotor is 2 × 105 kg − m2 and the synchronous
reactance of the machine is 4 Ω. Calculate teh frequency of oscillation of the rotor.

6. A 10000 kVA, 4 pole, 6600 V, 50 Hz, three-phase, star connected, alternator has a
synchronous reactance of 9 Ω and operates on a constant voltage, constant frequency
bus-bars. If the natural period of oscillation while operating at full load and unity power
factor is limited to 1.5 s, calculate the moment of inertia of the rotating system.

7. A 3.5 MVA, slow speed, three-phase, synchronous generator rated at 6.6 kV has 32 poles
has direct and quadrature axes reactances of 9.6 Ω and 6 Ω respectively and an
armature resistance of 1 Ω per phase. The generator supplies a load of 2.5 MW at 0.8
power factor lagging at 6.6 kV. Determine
a) Internal power factor angle
b) The direct axis and quadrature axis components of armature current.
c) Excitation voltage of the generator.
d) Percentage voltage regulation.
e) Draw phaor diagram when the alternator is delivering rated current but at leading
power factor.
