Tutorial-1
1. A three phase 16 pole alternator has a star connected winding with 144
slots and 10 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.03 Wb, sine
distributed and the speed is 375 rev per min. Find the frequency, and the
phase and line electromotive forces. The total turns per phase may be
assumed to be series connected.
2. A three-phase, 50 Hz, 1000 rpm, star connected alternator has an airgap
area of 314 cm2 per pole. The armature winding has a phase spread of 60
degrees and is accomodated in 4 slots per pole per phase with 6
conductors per slot. The coils are short pitched with a span of 165
degrees. The flux density distribution is given by
Bmax = 0.9 sin θ + 0.35 sin 3θ. Determine,
a) Winding factors for fundamental and third harmonic components.
b) Equation of induced e.m.f in one turn.
c) Equation of induced e.m.f per phase.
d) RMS value of phase voltage.
e) RMS value of line voltage.
3. The flux density distribution curve of a smooth-core, 50 Hz generator is
B = 10 sin θ + 2 sin 3θ + 2 sin 5θ + 2 sin 7θ, when θ is measured from the
neutral axis. The pole pitch is 35 cm, the core length is 32 cm, and the
stator coil span four-fifths of the pole pitch. Estimate the coil pitch to
eleminate the third harmonic component.
