Exercise Chapter 8

The document contains a series of mathematical exercises focusing on optimization and rates of change in various contexts. It includes problems related to finding maximum and minimum values of functions, rates of volume change in spherical and conical shapes, and optimizing dimensions for cost and material constraints. Each exercise presents a unique scenario requiring application of calculus principles.

EXERCISE CHAPTER 8

1. Find the absolute maximum and minimum values of 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 − 15𝑥 2 + 36𝑥 + 1 on the
interval [1,5].

2. A spherical balloon is deflated so that its radius decreases at a rate of 4 cm/sec. At what
rate does the volume of the balloon change when the radius is 3 cm?

3. A water tank in the shape of inverted right circular cone has height 10 m and radius 4m.
Water is pumped into the tank at a rate of 5 m3 per minute. Calculate the rate at which the
water level is rising when h is 6m.

4. A 15 ft ladder is sliding down a vertical wall at the rate of 0.5 ft/sec. How fast is the base
of the ladder moving away from the wall when it is 12 ft away from the wall.

5. We are going to fence in a rectangular field. If we look at the field from above the cost of
the vertical sides are $10/ft, the cost of the bottom is $2/ft and the cost of the top is $7/ft.
If we have $700 determine the dimensions of the field that will maximize the enclosed
area.

6. We want to construct a box with a square base and we only have 10 m2 of material to use
in construction of the box. Assuming that all the material is used in the construction
process determine the maximum volume that the box can have.

7. We want to construct a cylindrical can that will have a volume of 30 cm3. Determine the
dimensions of the can that will minimize the amount of material needed to construct the
can.
