Quality Inspector – Precision Machining & Manufacturing

Position Overview

The Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all manufactured parts and assemblies
meet customer specifications, engineering drawings, and applicable industry standards. The role
involves performing incoming, in-process, and final inspections, maintaining traceability, verifying
documentation, and ensuring compliance with AS9100 and IATF 16949 quality management
systems.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring airworthiness, reliability, and safety of aerospace and
automotive components.

Key Responsibilities

1. Inspection & Quality Control

 Perform incoming inspection of raw materials, purchased components, and subcontracted


parts.

 Conduct in-process inspections during machining, welding, and press operations.

 Perform final inspection of finished components prior to dispatch.

 Verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments such as:

o Vernier calipers

o Micrometers

o Height gauges

o Bore gauges

o Surface roughness testers

o Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM)

2. Drawing & Specification Verification

 Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T symbols, and technical specifications.


 Verify that manufactured parts meet tolerances and surface finish requirements.

 Ensure compliance with customer and regulatory specifications.

3. AS9100 & IATF Compliance

Ensure quality processes comply with:

AS9100

 Product traceability and identification

 First Article Inspection (FAI) as per AS9102 requirements

 Configuration control

 Risk-based thinking in inspection processes

 Non-conformance reporting and corrective actions

IATF 16949

 Process control and documentation

 Statistical process monitoring where applicable

 Control plan verification

 Measurement system analysis awareness

 Compliance with PPAP requirements

4. Documentation & Record Keeping

 Maintain inspection reports and quality documentation.

 Record inspection results in inspection reports, check sheets, and ERP systems.

 Ensure traceability of materials, parts, and inspection records.

 Support audit documentation for internal, customer, and certification audits.

5. Non-Conformance Handling

 Identify and segregate non-conforming products.

 Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).

 Work with production teams for root cause analysis and corrective actions.

6. Process Monitoring

 Monitor manufacturing processes for quality deviations.


 Ensure operators follow approved control plans and inspection procedures.

 Verify calibration status of inspection equipment.

7. Continuous Improvement

 Support implementation of:

o 5S practices

o Lean manufacturing initiatives

o Process improvement activities

 Participate in quality improvement projects.

Required Qualifications

Education

One of the following:

 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

 Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering / Production Engineering

 Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering

 Technical certification in Quality Control or Metrology

Preferred for aerospace quality roles.

Required Skills

Technical Skills

 Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T

 Knowledge of precision measuring instruments

 Understanding of machining processes (CNC turning, milling, grinding)

 Basic knowledge of welding inspection

 Understanding of press and sheet metal components

Quality System Knowledge

Familiarity with:

 AS9100

 IATF 16949

 ISO 9001 quality systems


 Control Plans

 PPAP documentation

 First Article Inspection (FAI)

Preferred Certifications

 Internal Auditor training for AS9100 / IATF 16949

 GD&T certification

 Calibration or metrology training

 NDT Level 1 (optional but valuable for aerospace)

Experience Requirements

Junior Quality Inspector

 1–3 years experience in manufacturing inspection

Senior Quality Inspector

 4–8 years experience in precision machining / aerospace / automotive manufacturing

Key Competencies

 High attention to detail

 Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

 Documentation accuracy

 Ability to work with production teams

 Commitment to quality and safety standards
