Particle Accelerators

Particle accelerators are scientific devices that accelerate photons using electrical and magnetic fields to achieve speeds close to light. They can potentially create miniature black holes, posing risks, particularly in large accelerators like the LHC. Invented to explore the fundamental rules of matter, they have also been involved in dangerous incidents, such as a 1978 accident that resulted in serious injury to a researcher.

Particle accelerators

What are particle accelerators and how do they

work?
A particle accelerator, is a scientific device that
accelerates photons. They do this using electrical
fields, an electrical field has the same way as
gravity would pull matter, force from an electrical
field pulls matter and makes it move, it will
increase its speed until it is incredibly fast, it can
also reach the speed of 186,000 miles/sec, speeds
close to the speed of light. A simple particle
accelerator is made by connecting two parallel
metal plates to a battery. The only issue is that the
electrical field would be too weak and to make it
as powerful as a regular particle accelerator we
would need around 5 trillion standard batteries to
make it which would cost far too much money and
space. So, physicists have come up with a brilliant
idea, they have decided to make a particle
accelerator using one very powerful cell(battery)
and a magnetic field. Using a magnetic field saves
up space, because it can go in circles. They have
built it by placing the cell, then adding a cylindrical
circle, they then connect each edge to one side of
the cell. After that, they add powerful magnets to
it too, which then creates an electro magnetic
field. And all this is done to make photons collide
with other photons.

How dangerous can they be?

Particle accelerators can destroy the entire solar
system, since it is possible for them to create
miniature black holes, it is only possible for this
disaster to happen only in the LHC, the largest
particle accelerator in the world with a
circumference of 16.6 miles, this can happen if the
photons are collided with other photons at an
extremely high speed, about the speed of light.
There is also another disaster that happened in
the year 1978, a man named Anatoli Bugorski was
checking if anything was wrong with the
accelerator, unfortunately the safety mechanisms
failed and started the accelerator, the beam of
photons entered the left side of his skull in a
kilometer less than the fastest thing in the
universe, and this lead him to have his left side of
his face paralyzed.

Why were they invented?

Particle accelerators were invented to teach us
about the fundamental rules that govern matter.
