TITLE: Function Generator
AIM: This mini project aims to design and implement a versatile function generator utilizing a
combination of electronic components, including operational amplifiers, capacitors, resistors,
and potentiometers. The generator will be capable of producing square, triangle, sine, and pulse
width modulation (PWM) signals with adjustable frequency and amplitude.
INTRODUCTION: Function generators are essential tools in electronics laboratories, providing
a variety of waveform outputs for testing and characterization of electronic circuits. This project
focuses on creating a function generator that can generate square, triangle, sine waves, and PWM
signals, offering a flexible solution for a range of applications.
COMPONENTS:
1. LM 324 or 741c operational amplifier
2. Capacitors: 1uF
3. Resistors: 10k, 100k
4. Potentiometer: 20k, 100k
5. Bridge rectifier (4 diodes)
6. Centre tapped transformer
7. AC voltage source
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:
WORKING PRINCIPLE:
The function generator employs multiple stages to generate various waveforms:
Square Wave Generation: The first operational amplifier is configured as an oscillator to produce
a square waveform.
Triangle Wave Generation: The square wave is then fed into an op-amp integrator configuration,
resulting in a triangle waveform.
Sine Wave Approximation: Further integration of the triangle waveform produces a parabolic
wave, approximating a sine wave.
Frequency and Amplitude Control: Two potentiometers allow the user to adjust the frequency
and amplitude of the generated signals, providing flexibility in testing and experimentation.
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM): The triangle waveform is directed through an op-amp in a
comparator configuration to generate PWM signals. The duty cycle is adjustable by varying the
comparator's threshold using another potentiometer.
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE:
Power Supply: Connect the function generator to a stable power supply within the specified
voltage range.
Signal Selection: Use switches or controls to select the desired waveform (square, triangle, sine,
or PWM).
Adjustment: Fine-tune the frequency and amplitude using the corresponding potentiometers for
precise control over the generated signal.
Output Connection: Connect the function generator output to the circuit under test or
measurement equipment.
APPLICATION OF FUNCTION GENERATOR
Circuit Testing and Debugging: Generate specific waveforms to analyse and troubleshoot
electronic circuits.
Educational Purposes: Demonstrate waveform characteristics and signal processing concepts in
educational settings.
Filter Testing: Evaluate the response of filters to different input signals.
PWM Signal Generation: Useful for motor control, power electronics, and other applications
requiring pulse width modulation.
