🎙 VOICE OVER (Narrator):
In the 19th century, the Philippines was under Spanish rule.
The church and government held great power.
Many Filipinos suffered from injustice, poverty, and abuse.
A young Filipino doctor, José Rizal, wrote a novel that exposed the truth.
That novel was Noli Me Tangere — “Touch Me Not.”
This is the story of love, sacrifice, oppression, and awakening.
[Music rises. Curtains slowly open.]
ACT 1: THE RETURN (10 Minutes)
SCENE 1: DINNER AT KAPITAN TIAGO’S HOUSE
Characters: Kapitan Tiago, Padre Damaso, Padre Salvi, Maria Clara, Tiya
Isabel, Crisostomo Ibarra
Setting: Elegant dining area.
Kapitan Tiago:
Welcome, friends! Tonight we celebrate the return of Crisostomo Ibarra from
Europe!
Ibarra:
Thank you. After seven years of study, I return to serve my country.
Maria Clara:
Crisostomo… I prayed for your safe return every night.
Padre Damaso (cold tone):
Ah yes… the son of Don Rafael.
Ibarra:
Please, Father. Tell me about my father’s final days.
Padre Damaso:
He died in prison. Accused of rebellion.
Ibarra (shocked):
Rebellion? My father loved this country!
Padre Damaso:
He opposed the church. That is enough.
[Tension rises. Maria Clara looks worried.]
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Ibarra learns that his father, Don Rafael, was falsely imprisoned and died in
suffering.
The seed of anger begins to grow in his heart.
SCENE 2: DON RAFAEL’S MEMORY (Flashback)
Characters: Don Rafael, Padre Damaso, Guardia Sibil
[Lights dim. Flashback effect.]
Don Rafael:
I only defended myself! I struck the man because he insulted me!
Padre Damaso:
You are a threat to the church!
Guardia Sibil:
You are under arrest!
[Don Rafael is dragged away.]
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Don Rafael dies alone in prison.
His body is denied a proper burial.
Injustice has taken another innocent life.
ACT 2: THE SUFFERING OF THE POOR (10 Minutes)
SCENE 3: SISA AND HER FAMILY
Characters: Sisa, Basilio, Crispin, Pedro
Setting: Poor hut.
Sisa:
Basilio, Crispin, serve well at the church.
Crispin (afraid):
Mother, they accuse us of stealing money!
Basilio:
We are innocent!
Pedro (drunk):
If you cause trouble, do not come home!
[Guardia Sibil enters.]
Guardia Sibil:
The boys must answer for the missing money!
[Crispin is dragged away.]
Crispin:
Mother! Help me!
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Crispin disappears.
Basilio escapes.
Sisa begins losing her sanity from grief.
SCENE 4: SISA’S MADNESS
Setting: Forest
Sisa (wandering):
Crispin? Basilio? I hear you…
Basilio:
Mother!
[Sisa laughs and cries uncontrollably.]
Basilio:
Mother, please!
[She collapses slowly.]
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Sisa’s death symbolizes the suffering of the Filipino motherland — abused
and forgotten.
ACT 3: HOPE AND CORRUPTION (12 Minutes)
SCENE 5: THE SCHOOL PROJECT
Characters: Ibarra, Pilosopong Tasyo, Padre Salvi, Padre Damaso, Kapitan
Tiago
Ibarra:
I will build a school for our children.
Pilosopong Tasyo:
Education awakens minds. But awakened minds are feared.
Padre Damaso:
Education must remain under church control!
Padre Salvi:
This may inspire rebellion.
Ibarra:
Education is not rebellion. It is progress.
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Ibarra believes reform is possible.
But powerful men feel threatened.
SCENE 6: ELIAS’ WARNING
Characters: Ibarra, Elias
Elias:
The system is corrupt. Reform will not be enough.
Ibarra:
Violence is not the answer.
Elias:
Then be prepared. They are planning against you.
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Elias sees revolution as necessary.
Ibarra still hopes for peaceful change.
ACT 4: BETRAYAL AND FALL (8 Minutes)
SCENE 7: THE TULISAN INCIDENT
Characters: Tulisan, Ibarra, Elias
[Tulisan attacks.]
Tulisan:
You cannot change this world!
[Elias saves Ibarra.]
Elias:
They want you dead!
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Soon after, weapons are planted in Ibarra’s house.
He is accused of rebellion.
SCENE 8: ARREST
Characters: Guardia Sibil, Padre Salvi, Ibarra
Guardia Sibil:
Crisostomo Ibarra! You are under arrest!
Ibarra:
This is false!
Padre Salvi (calmly):
The evidence speaks for itself.
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Ibarra becomes the victim of the same injustice that killed his father.
ACT 5: LOVE AND SACRIFICE (5 Minutes)
SCENE 9: MARIA CLARA’S TRUTH
Characters: Maria Clara, Padre Damaso, Tiya Isabel
Padre Damaso:
You will marry a Spaniard.
Maria Clara:
I love Crisostomo!
Padre Damaso:
He is dead.
Maria Clara:
Then I choose the convent.
Tiya Isabel:
My poor child…
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Maria Clara sacrifices her happiness.
Love is defeated by power.
ACT 6: FINAL SACRIFICE (5 Minutes)
SCENE 10: ELIAS’ DEATH
Characters: Elias, Ibarra
Setting: River at night.
Elias:
Take the boat. Escape.
Ibarra:
Come with me!
Elias:
My life is nothing… if it means freedom someday.
[Gunshots.]
Elias:
If you survive… remember us…
[Elias dies.]
🎙 VOICE OVER:
Elias sacrifices his life.
Ibarra disappears.
The revolution has not yet begun — but the awakening has started.
FINAL TABLEAU (5 Minutes)
[All characters return slowly on stage. Dim lighting.]
Sisa kneels.
Maria Clara in veil.
Ibarra looking forward.
Elias lying still.
Friars standing proudly.
🎙 FINAL VOICE OVER:
Noli Me Tangere exposed corruption in the church and government.
It showed the suffering of the Filipino people.
Through this novel, José Rizal awakened nationalism.
The story did not end here.
Because when a people awaken —
Freedom follows.
[All cast step forward.]
