1. DIY cloud chamber.
Description — can show or indicate the subatomic particles bouncing in the container. You will
examine the alpha atom bouncing around, and the electron can be seen if you see a line that’s
slanted or is curved.
Data Plan – Measure tracks per minute. Track types are alpha like short, thick, dense. Beta like
medium, thin, wiggly. Maun like long, straight tracks, often from cosmic muons.
2. Air vortex cannon.
Description – A simple vortex cannon that shoots visible smoke rings. Audiences love interactive
experiments.
Data Plan — Measure ring velocity, range, impulse and how those change with tension and
launch energy.
3. Sodium Acetate.
Description – We will make a supersaturated sodium acetate solution that stays liquid when
undisturbed and then crystallizes into a white ice like solid (a tower) when disturbed.
Data Plan – Measure the temperature rise to estimate the energy released.
4. Sand Pendulum.
Description – A pendulum that is moving around while sand is getting poured down while it
moves, which creates amazing art.
Data Plan – Duration till pendulum stops.
5. Oloids.
Description – A shape that is abnormal and is not a circle or round, but still it moves around and
behaves like a ball.
Data Plan – Record how long the oloid can last before stopping.
